Professor Penalized for Unauthorized Lab Access Amid Recruitment Scandal
A professor at a national university has been handed a substantial fine for repeatedly and illegally entering the research laboratories of colleagues within the same department. The incident has cast a shadow over academic integrity and is currently under further investigation by the Ministry of Education.
Judge Lee Dong-ho of the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 3 imposed a fine of 5 million Korean won (approximately $3,700 USD) on Professor A, affiliated with the Urban Engineering Department at National Incheon University. The sentencing, which occurred on the 26th, addressed the professor’s unauthorized entries into restricted research spaces.
The court emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating, “The defendant, as a professor at a national university, unlawfully entered a colleague’s research lab, making the nature of the crime severe.” The judge further noted that “Strict punishment is necessary as the victim has not forgiven the act.” Despite the severity, the court also acknowledged mitigating factors in its sentencing considerations. These included the defendant’s admission of guilt and expression of remorse, the absence of any additional damage beyond the unauthorized access itself, and a clean prior criminal record.
This judicial outcome follows a more severe recommendation from prosecutors, who had sought a six-month prison sentence during the final hearing the previous month. Their argument cited “multiple instances of the crime and the lack of a settlement with the victim.”
Professor A faced charges related to 14 separate instances of unauthorized entry into the research laboratories of two fellow professors within the same Urban Engineering Department at National Incheon University, located in Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. These intrusions reportedly took place between April 8 and November 11, 2023.
Investigations revealed a modus operandi involving the use of a master key, which was kept in the department office. Professor A allegedly accessed the labs during late-night or early-morning hours, times when such access would be highly irregular and conspicuous.
The alleged unauthorized entries are suspected to be linked to a broader academic misconduct scandal. Professor A is purportedly under scrutiny for potentially stealing documents pertinent to the Urban Engineering Department’s full-time faculty recruitment process in 2023. The allegations are particularly damning, suggesting that Professor A, while serving as a member of the recruitment committee, may have leaked confidential interview questions to a specific applicant and subsequently manipulated scoring to unfairly favor that individual. The Ministry of Education has confirmed it is currently conducting an audit into these serious claims.
In response to the escalating allegations and the judicial proceedings, Professor A was suspended from their academic position by the university on the 12th of the previous month. Disciplinary procedures initiated by the university are reportedly ongoing.
