Tragedy Strikes Middle School Trip: Young Boy Drowns in Pennsylvania River

A tragic accident has cast a shadow over an annual middle school excursion in Pennsylvania, resulting in the heartbreaking death of a 12-year-old boy. Cesar Albarracin Guncay, a sixth-grader from Pierson Middle School in Sag Harbor, New York, lost his life on May 27th while participating in a guided rafting trip on the Lehigh River in the Poconos. The Carbon County Coroner’s Office confirmed the fatality.

Cesar was among five individuals aboard an inflatable raft that capsized during a larger group expedition. While the other four occupants managed to resurface, Cesar tragically did not. This prompted an immediate and urgent search and rescue operation along mile marker 99 of the river. Despite the swift response, Cesar was pronounced deceased at 6:50 pm after being brought ashore by the Lehighton Fire Department’s dive team.

Ashley Buestan, Cesar’s cousin, shared that the young boy, originally from Ecuador, had relocated to the United States approximately three years prior. “It’s confusing, it’s overwhelming,” Buestan commented, recalling Cesar’s enthusiasm for the rafting excursion. She remembered him as a vibrant child with a passion for art and soccer. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that Buestan’s younger sister, Cesar’s best friend, was also on the trip and witnessed the devastating event.

The outing, organised by Whitewater Rafting Adventures in Nesquehoning, comprised a total of 74 students from the sixth grade. This marked the third consecutive year the school had organised this trip to the Poconos for its students. An itinerary, which has since been removed from the school’s website, indicated that the students were scheduled for a day of activities including ziplining, swimming, and lunch before their rafting adventure. The rafting portion of the trip was planned for an 11-mile stretch of the Lehigh River, a journey typically completed in about four hours.

At the time the children embarked on their journey in 13 rafts, the water levels in the Lehigh River were reported to be around 3.6 feet. It was near the conclusion of their route that the rafts encountered a significant obstacle: a fallen tree that partially obstructed a large section of the river. This unexpected hazard is believed to have played a role in the raft capsizing.

Safety Measures and Investigation

According to a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Mike Parker, life jackets were indeed being worn by participants at the time of the incident. Parker acknowledged that fatalities are infrequent occurrences for the commission and stated that the incident would trigger a thorough review of all safety equipment and protocols. “But even with a life jacket on, there’s still other factors,” he noted, suggesting that a combination of circumstances likely contributed to the tragic outcome.

The owners of Whitewater Rafting Adventures, Hilary and Steve Bretzik, expressed their profound sorrow over the event. “Our entire team is heartbroken by what occurred,” they stated, emphasizing that their primary concern remains with Cesar’s grieving family and friends.

Community in Mourning

The Sag Harbor School District superintendent, Jeff Nichols, issued a statement conveying the deep sense of loss felt by the school community. “Cesar’s death will leave an irreplaceable space in our classrooms, our hallways and our lives,” Nichols said. He assured that the district would provide extensive support, with school counselors and staff available to assist students, families, and faculty in coping with the grief. “Grief can feel overwhelming, especially for young people trying to make sense of something so heartbreaking,” Nichols added.

Students who were scheduled to stay overnight departed early following the drowning and returned to Sag Harbor around 2:00 am on Thursday. An autopsy was conducted on Thursday at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensic Center, with the cause and manner of death officially determined to be accidental drowning.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support Cesar’s family, with the memorial page describing him as “a kind, handsome and athletic 6th grader, a friend to many, and a beloved neighborhood kid here in Sag Harbor.” The page further states, “He is immediately missed by his classmates, teachers, school families and the entire community.” As of Saturday evening, the fundraising effort had garnered approximately $232,000 towards its initial goal of $350,000.

In recognition of the profound loss, Sag Harbor Village mayor Thomas Gardella announced on Friday that the town’s flags would be flown at half-mast in Cesar’s honour. Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities seeking to understand all contributing factors that led to this devastating loss.
