22Canadian health officials confirmed on Saturday that a traveler from the MV Hondius, which was affected by hantavirus, tested positive for the Andes strain of the virus in British Columbia. Authorities are still tracking possible exposures connected to the global outbreak.
The Canadian Public Health Agency stated that the infected person was admitted to the hospital on Thursday along with their spouse, who is also showing mild symptoms. Both are currently in isolation while further testing is being carried out at Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg, with results anticipated within the next 48 hours.
Authorities mentioned that a third person, currently in isolation at a secure facility, was also moved to the hospital for testing “as a precaution.” Officials did not explain the person’s connection to the couple or if they had sailed on the cruise ship.
The organization stated that the general risk to Canadians is still minimal, even though the Andes virus is the sole hantavirus known to allow some transmission between people.
Canadian officials are currently keeping track of numerous possible contacts associated with the outbreak. Previous reports indicated that several travelers from British Columbia, Yukon, Ontario, and Quebec were being monitored or isolated after returning from the trip.
