Police are investigating a troubling incident involving a group of e-bike riders who threw rocks at a bus on the Gold Coast, leading to a collision that caused the vehicle to leave the road. The event occurred around 11:23 PM on Saturday night when the group targeted a passenger bus traveling along Teemangum Street in Currumbin.
The bus, which had five passengers on board, was hit by the rocks, causing the female driver to lose control of the vehicle. As a result, the bus crashed head-on into a tree. Fortunately, the driver was not seriously injured and was taken to Robina Hospital for observation as a precautionary measure.
In a statement, police urged anyone with information about the incident or relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward and assist with the investigation. They emphasized the importance of community cooperation in identifying those responsible for the attack.
Tom Kinsey, the executive general manager of Kinetic – the company that operates the buses – issued a statement expressing concern over the incident. He confirmed that no one on the bus was injured, but he strongly condemned the attack, calling it unacceptable behavior that endangers drivers, passengers, and the wider community.
“This was a deeply distressing incident for the bus driver and passengers involved, and we are in contact with those affected to offer our support,” said Kinsey.
He further added that attacks on drivers and passengers are completely unacceptable. “We strongly condemn any behaviour that puts the safety of our drivers, the passengers on board and the community at risk. We are working closely with Queensland Police as they investigate the matter.”
