Furniture Factory Inferno Erupts in Sea Park, Petaling Jaya, Threatening Nearby Petrol Stations

A seemingly quiet Sunday afternoon in Sea Park, Petaling Jaya, was shattered by a dramatic inferno that engulfed a furniture factory, transforming the neighbourhood into a scene reminiscent of an action movie. The blaze, which broke out around 1:15 p.m., quickly escalated, sending thick plumes of black smoke skyward and creating a palpable sense of urgency among residents.

The fire consumed a substantial furniture factory, estimated to be approximately 100 by 50 square meters. By the time emergency services arrived, the structure was fully alight, a terrifying spectacle against the afternoon sky. The situation was further amplified by a series of unsettling explosions. While not powerful enough to shatter windows, these sharp, popping sounds fuelled anxiety among onlookers, raising questions about the burning materials and the safety of their proximity to the unfolding disaster.

The immediate aftermath saw a chaotic scene as residents scrambled to protect their vehicles, with black water from firefighting efforts spraying across the area. The only silver lining in this otherwise alarming event was the confirmed absence of any injuries. However, the fire’s proximity to two petrol stations, situated less than 100 meters away, dramatically heightened the stakes, turning a potential industrial accident into a highly precarious situation for the entire community.

A Coordinated Emergency Response

Recognising the severity of the incident, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department mobilised a significant force. Thirty-four firefighters, deployed from four different stations, were dispatched to the scene. The operation was treated with the utmost seriousness, with police swiftly cordoning off the affected area. As the fire raged, authorities took the crucial step of evacuating residents and bystanders to ensure their safety from the encroaching flames and hazardous smoke.

Residents Recount Alarming Moments

The sudden eruption of the fire left many residents in shock and disbelief. One woman, who was at home preparing for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, recounted her initial confusion.

“I thought someone was burning trash,” she told reporters, describing how the unmistakable scent of burning and a noticeable increase in heat emanating into her home alerted her to the unfolding crisis. Upon investigating, she discovered the extent of the fire and immediately contacted the fire department. Prioritising her safety, she quickly gathered her essential belongings and evacuated her residence.

A particularly concerning detail emerged regarding the firefighting efforts. The resident mentioned that at one point, firefighters experienced a shortage of water and had to source additional supplies from a nearby petrol station. This logistical challenge, while seemingly extraordinary, underscores the unpredictable and often resource-intensive nature of large-scale fires.

Another resident, living in close proximity to the factory, described being jolted awake by shouts of “Fire!” He rushed outside to witness flames leaping from behind his house, with ash and soot beginning to blanket his surroundings.

“I called the fire department many times, but no one answered,” he stated, expressing his frustration and growing concern. “The firefighters finally arrived about 30 minutes later.” This significant delay in response time would have undoubtedly amplified the anxiety of those watching the fire spread, with the looming threat of the nearby petrol stations adding to their worries.

Onlookers and Ongoing Investigations

Reporters present at the scene described the visual and auditory chaos. Black water gushed from the factory, a stark indicator of the intense firefighting efforts. The intermittent popping sounds suggested volatile materials within the factory reacting to the extreme heat, adding another layer of unease.

As is often the case with large fires, the spectacle drew a considerable crowd of onlookers. Police officers found themselves managing the curious public, ensuring that their desire for a closer look did not compromise their safety or impede the crucial work of the emergency responders.

Firefighters remained at the site well into the late afternoon, diligently working to fully extinguish the remaining embers and commencing the crucial task of investigating the cause of the devastating blaze. As of the latest reports, no official cause has been determined, and authorities continue their thorough examination of the incident.
