Inspiring the Next Generation: Medical Women Advocate for Resilience and Well-being
The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Oyo State chapter, has launched a vital initiative aimed at empowering students, particularly young women, to navigate the challenges of adolescence and aspire to greater heights. As part of activities commemorating International Women’s Day, MWAN organised an outreach programme at Anglican Commercial Grammar School Senior, delivering a powerful message of resilience, ambition, and the paramount importance of mental and physical health.
Dr. Shakirat Olanlege, the State President of MWAN Oyo, spearheaded the event, emphasizing the critical need to inspire young individuals, especially girls, to recognise and cultivate their inherent potential. She urged them to pursue professional success in any field they choose, underscoring the belief that with the right support and mindset, women can achieve parity with men in all spheres of life.
“We are providing them with an opportunity to be motivated so they can evolve into resilient future leaders that we can all be proud of,” Dr. Olanlege stated. Her words resonated with the students, who were encouraged by the presence and shared experiences of accomplished medical professionals.
These medical professionals, including Dr. Olanlege, candidly shared their personal journeys, illustrating that dedication and perseverance are the cornerstones of achieving excellence. Their stories served as tangible proof that success is not an unattainable dream but a reachable goal for those willing to invest the effort.
Addressing the Growing Mental Health Crisis
A significant focus of the outreach was the increasingly concerning issue of youth mental health. Dr. Olanlege issued a stern warning against the perils of drug abuse and the detrimental impact of negative peer influence. She highlighted how these factors can contribute to depression among young people, particularly in the aftermath of academic disappointments.
“Failure in examinations is not the definitive end of one’s aspirations. Students must dedicate themselves to diligent study and meticulous planning. Even in the face of setbacks, resorting to harmful decisions or substance abuse is never the answer,” she advised, advocating for healthier coping mechanisms and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
Promoting Holistic Well-being: Beyond Academics
The outreach programme also coincided with vital awareness campaigns following World Oral Health Day. Dr. Olanlege took the opportunity to educate the students on the fundamental principles of proper oral hygiene. Key recommendations included brushing their teeth at least twice daily and significantly reducing the consumption of sugary foods and beverages.
To foster overall well-being, she encouraged the adoption of healthier alternatives. This included promoting the intake of fruits, vegetables, and a balanced diet, highlighting the interconnectedness of nutrition and health.
Dr. Olanlege further articulated a powerful vision linking individual health to the broader concept of national development. She explained that the health of children directly influences their growth into healthy adults, which in turn cultivates a stronger and more vibrant society. “Healthy families form the bedrock of healthy communities, and collectively, this creates a thriving nation,” she asserted.
A Principal’s Endorsement and a Call to Action
Mrs. Janet Olanrewaju, the principal of Anglican Commercial Grammar School Senior, lauded the MWAN initiative, describing it as both timely and profoundly impactful. She noted the invaluable benefit of exposing students, especially girls, to positive role models. Such encounters, she believes, can ignite aspirations, encourage them to dream beyond perceived limitations, and motivate them to pursue success across a diverse range of fields. This reinforces the empowering message that women are capable of excelling far beyond traditional societal expectations.
“A woman’s sphere of influence extends far beyond the confines of the kitchen. They must aspire to greatness, maintain an unwavering focus on their education, cultivate discipline, and remain resilient in the face of adversity,” Mrs. Olanrewaju declared, echoing Dr. Olanlege’s sentiments.
Mrs. Oje, another prominent figure at the event, further emphasized resilience as an indispensable attribute for success. While acknowledging that the path to achievement is often fraught with challenges, she stressed that unwavering determination and persistent effort can empower young individuals to surmount any obstacle.
The impact of this outreach extended beyond the school premises, with a market engagement held at Bodija market. These multifaceted efforts are integral to MWAN’s overarching mission to empower young people and women, fostering confidence, responsibility, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of society.
