“Zirara Zishya”: A Beloved Rwandan Drama Series Ignites New Life After Two Decades

A cornerstone of Rwandan television entertainment in the early 2010s, the popular drama series “Zirara Zishya,” meaning “Homes burn overnight” in Kinyarwanda, is poised for a remarkable comeback. Production is slated to resume in mid-April, an endeavour that comes nearly two decades after the show’s original run was abruptly suspended due to unforeseen financial challenges. This revival is a testament to the enduring appeal of the series and the passionate fanbase that has consistently called for its return.

Charles Habyarimana, the visionary creator and director behind “Zirara Zishya,” revealed that the decision to resurrect the production was directly influenced by the unwavering demand from viewers. Many fans felt that the narrative had been left incomplete, yearning for a resolution to the intricate storylines and character arcs that had captivated them.

“We made the decision to continue the film because fans persistently requested it. If you examine the narrative, it stopped before reaching its natural conclusion,” Habyarimana explained. He elaborated on the circumstances that led to the initial hiatus: “We halted production due to significant losses incurred at the time. Our primary distribution method was through the sale of films on CDs, and unfortunately, in numerous instances, the anticipated revenue never materialized for us.”

The landscape of content distribution and monetization has undergone a seismic shift since the early 2000s. The advent and widespread adoption of digital platforms have created new avenues for creators to reach audiences and generate income. It is this evolution that has made the revival of “Zirara Zishya” a tangible possibility.

“I have decided to proceed with the continuation because I have now identified a viable method for distributing the film via YouTube and generating revenue, a stark contrast to the past when our sole reliance was on CD sales,” Habyarimana stated, highlighting the transformative impact of digital media.

Filming for the new season is strategically scheduled to commence following the annual commemoration week dedicated to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This period of solemn remembrance, observed every April, holds significant cultural and historical importance in Rwanda.

The upcoming season promises the return of many of the characters that audiences grew to love. Fans can anticipate seeing familiar faces such as Samusure, Mukarujanga, Nyagahene, Nyirakanyana, Nyirankende, Kanyamanza, Gasega, Rumende, Nzovu, Nyina wa Mbogo, Nyirankoko, and Nyirantama, among others. Their reappearance is expected to rekindle the strong emotional connection viewers have with the series.

The original season of “Zirara Zishya” played a pivotal role in launching the careers of several actors who have since ascended to prominence within Rwanda’s vibrant film industry. Notable alumni include Gratien Niyitegeka, who portrayed Sekaganda, Ndjoli Kayitankore, known for his role as Kanyombya, and Venuste Bahizi, who brought Nzovu to life. Their success underscores the platform that “Zirara Zishya” provided for emerging talent.

According to Habyarimana, the production team is aiming for the return of at least 90 percent of the original cast. However, he acknowledged that two of the series’ most recognizable figures may not be able to reprise their roles.

“Sekaganda has a multitude of commitments, which may make his return quite challenging. As for Kanyombya, his character’s reintroduction would necessitate the development of a new storyline to seamlessly integrate him back into the plot, given that he had already exited the narrative,” Habyarimana explained, providing insight into the casting considerations.

The series’ title, “Zirara Zishya,” offers a poignant glimpse into its thematic core. The drama delves into the intricacies of domestic life, meticulously exploring the conflicts, dynamics, and everyday relationships that unfold between couples and neighbours. It was this relatable and compelling portrayal of human interaction that cemented its status as a fan favourite before its abrupt conclusion.

The new season of “Zirara Zishya” will be exclusively streamed on the YouTube channel of Abasare Films. In anticipation of the relaunch, episodes from the first season are already being uploaded. This initiative provides an invaluable opportunity for both new viewers to discover the series and for long-time fans to refresh their memories and reconnect with the captivating story ahead of the new episodes.
