Rwanda has secured the hosting rights for the 13th Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT) Congress in 2028, marking a significant achievement after a rigorous bidding process that saw the nation triumph over strong contenders like Ethiopia and Nigeria. The announcement was made in Namibia during the preceding 12th AfSBT Congress, which convened from March 23rd to 26th. This esteemed gathering served as a vital nexus for leading professionals in transfusion medicine and blood services from across the African continent.

The AfSBT Congress, held biennially, is a cornerstone event for the advancement of transfusion medicine in Africa. It provides an indispensable platform for physicians, dedicated researchers, and vital blood transfusion services to convene, exchange invaluable knowledge, showcase groundbreaking advancements, and collaboratively work towards strengthening blood management systems throughout the region.

The anticipated 2028 congress in Rwanda is projected to draw an impressive cohort of approximately 1,000 delegates. This diverse group will include esteemed experts, influential policymakers, and seasoned practitioners, not only from various African nations but also from international institutions, fostering a truly global perspective on transfusion medicine.

This marks a significant return for Rwanda, as the nation last hosted the AfSBT Congress in 2016. Its successful bid to host again in Kigali in 2028 underscores Rwanda’s sustained progress and unwavering commitment to the development of its healthcare sector. This commitment is particularly evident in the country’s advancements in biotherapy and its dedicated research efforts in the critical field of blood transfusion.

A Strategic Move for Healthcare Advancement

The AfSBT Congress operates on a rotational basis, alternating between Francophone and Anglophone host countries. This strategic approach ensures that a broad spectrum of scientific communities across Africa, representing diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, are given a voice and an opportunity to contribute to the collective knowledge base.

Dr. Thomas Muyombo, the Director of the Regional Center for Blood Transfusion at the Rwanda Biomedical Centre, heralded the hosting win as a monumental milestone for the nation’s health sector. He articulated the immense value this event holds for Rwanda’s medical professionals, stating, “This congress is an opportunity for our doctors to learn from global experts and for our researchers to share their work with colleagues from across Africa.”

Reinforcing Rwanda’s Position as a Medical Hub

Beyond the immediate benefits of knowledge exchange and professional development, Dr. Muyombo emphasized the broader implications of hosting the 2028 congress. He posited that the event will serve to further solidify Rwanda’s burgeoning reputation as a leading regional hub for medical collaboration and innovation. This designation is a testament to the country’s deep-seated commitment to elevating healthcare standards and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within its borders and for the wider African continent.

The successful bid highlights Rwanda’s growing capacity to host international scientific events and its dedication to contributing to global health initiatives. The congress is expected to spur further investment and research in blood transfusion services, ultimately benefiting patients across Africa.

Key Takeaways from the 2028 Hosting Rights:

  • Prestigious Recognition: Rwanda’s selection as host for the 13th AfSBT Congress in 2028 is a testament to its advancements in healthcare and its commitment to the field of transfusion medicine.
  • Knowledge Exchange: The congress will facilitate the sharing of critical knowledge and best practices among African and international experts in blood transfusion.
  • Research and Development: It provides a platform for Rwandan researchers to showcase their work and collaborate on new advancements in biotherapy and blood management.
  • Economic and Diplomatic Benefits: Hosting such a significant international event is expected to bring economic benefits and strengthen Rwanda’s diplomatic ties within the global health community.
  • Inspiration and Capacity Building: The congress will inspire a new generation of healthcare professionals and contribute to building local capacity in transfusion medicine.

The return of the AfSBT Congress to Rwanda underscores the nation’s trajectory of progress in healthcare and its ambition to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of transfusion medicine across the African continent.
