Macy Gray, the Grammy Award-winning artist known for her distinctive voice and hit song “I Try,” has finally shed light on the peculiar incident that unfolded during her appearance on The Masked Singer Australia in 2021. The US singer, who was unmasked as Atlantis on the Channel Ten show, caused a stir when she reportedly “refused to leave” the stage after being eliminated. Now, the 58-year-old star has clarified the situation, explaining the misunderstanding stemmed from a request for an encore performance, which she was not keen to deliver.
“I just wanted to get out of there, I just wanted to go,” Gray told news.com.au. “I didn’t want to stick around. You know, nobody wants to lose, and then to come out and sing a song? I just don’t… It’s very intense, you know?” Her candid admission offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the pressures and expectations of reality television competitions.
A Tour Down Under Beckons
Adding to the excitement, Macy Gray announced that she will be embarking on an extensive 21-show tour across Australia later this year. The “Encore Tour” is set to kick off on Friday, September 11th, at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. From there, Gray will traverse the country, gracing stages in Adelaide, Hobart, Sydney, Canberra, and Brisbane. The tour isn’t limited to major cities either, with the beloved singer also scheduled to perform in regional centres such as Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Townsville, and Cairns, promising a wide reach for her Australian fanbase.

The incident in question occurred in September 2021, when Macy Gray, whose birth name is Natalie Renée McIntyre, surprised viewers by her reluctance to depart the competition after her elimination. At the time, series judge Dave Hughes recounted the event on 2Day FM’s Morning Crew, describing the singer’s strong desire to continue.
“Macy Gray had such passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave, she refused to,” Hughes explained. “She said, ‘No, I’m continuing in the show,’ and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, ‘No, you have to leave.’ She said, ‘No, I’m not.’”
The comedian further elaborated on the logistical challenges this presented for the show’s production. “The thing is, we can’t do the end of the show unless the head comes off.” Co-host Ed Kavalee chimed in, painting a humorous picture of the situation: “So, she still had the head on, and they’re saying, ‘Hey, Macy-slash-Atlantis, we need you to take the head off so you can go.’ [And] she’s responding, ‘No I’m keeping the head on’?”

Comedian Urzila Carlson correctly identified her, while other judges had made guesses including Rihanna, Noni Hazlehurst, and Bonnie Tyler. The episode saw Atlantis facing off against Lightning, with Atlantis ultimately being voted out by the viewing public.
