Addis Ababa, May 16, 2026 — The broad political environment in Ethiopia has allowed political groups and residents to engage actively in the 7th General Election, as stated by Maru Jane, Chairman of the Addis Ababa Political Parties Joint Council.
In a special interview with ENA, the Chairman mentioned that the Council has been involved in the electoral process and initiatives designed to boost public involvement, as well as motivating political parties to present their manifestos while adhering to election laws and rules.
He mentioned that political parties and citizens are involved in the process because of the enhanced political climate.
Others are also striving to keep the election peaceful, just, and democratic, Maru stated.
He stated, “the initiatives to expand the political arena in the 7th General Election, when viewed against the 6th General Election, mark a major advancement.”
More individuals managed to acquire voter cards this time, indicating the growth of the political arena.
The Chairman stated, ‘The Council has been tasked with increasing awareness among Addis Ababa’s residents through various methods to help citizens obtain voter cards and participate in the election.’
Furthermore, political parties received instruction to enhance their involvement in the electoral procedure.
Additionally, the Council, working together with the National Election Board, has been increasing public understanding of election regulations and assisting parties in promoting their manifestos and presenting their political agendas.
Promoting the supportive environment established for political parties and citizens to fully participate in the 7th General Election, Maru emphasized that the Council will enhance its efforts to ensure a peaceful conduct of the election.
Over 50,514,000 voters have signed up nationwide for the upcoming 7th General Election.
Citizens took part in the process via the “Mirchaye” mobile app as a digital option, and also by attending in person at different polling stations. More than 5.5 million voters used the online platform, with the rest being handled manually.
