A Turbulent Primary Election in Louisiana
President Donald Trump made a strong and emotional statement against Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, labeling him a “disloyal disaster” and a “terrible guy” just before polls closed in a high-stakes primary election. The president expressed his frustration through a post on Truth Social, a platform he frequently uses to share his views.
The post was shared early Saturday morning as voters across the state cast their ballots. Hours later, Cassidy faced a significant defeat, marking a pivotal moment in the political landscape of Louisiana.
Trump’s message was clear: “Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana is a disloyal disaster. His entire past campaign for the Senate was about ‘TRUMP,’ how he’s with me all the way, and then, after winning, he turned around and voted to IMPEACH me for something that has now proven to be total ‘bulls***!’”
He continued, “He knew that at the time, but didn’t care. Bill Cassidy is a sleazebag, a terrible guy, who is BAD FOR LOUISIANA. Now he’s going to get CLOBBERED, hopefully, in today’s BIG election, by two great people!!!”
Cassidy was not the only candidate in the race. He faced off against two other GOP candidates, including Representative Julia Letlow, who had the endorsement of Trump. This primary was seen as a crucial test for both candidates and the broader Republican Party in the state.

A Controversial Vote
Cassidy was one of seven GOP senators who voted to convict Trump during the 2021 impeachment trial over the January 6 Capitol attack. Although Trump was ultimately acquitted, the vote left a lasting impact on his political career.
Last month, Cassidy acknowledged that his 2021 vote could be a liability in the primary election. However, he emphasized his working relationship with the president, stating, “If you want somebody who works well with President Trump, you vote for Bill Cassidy. He may not like me, but he has signed into law four bills that I either wrote or negotiated in the last four months.”
Trump, in turn, encouraged Louisiana residents to support Letlow, calling her a “winner who will NEVER let you down.” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry also endorsed Letlow earlier this year, further boosting her chances in the race.

A New Chapter for Louisiana Politics
Letlow, who first took office in 2021 following a special election, succeeded her husband, who initially won the seat in 2020 but passed away from complications related to COVID-19 just days before his swearing-in ceremony. Her journey into politics highlights the challenges and changes within the state’s political landscape.
Cassidy’s loss marked a historic moment, as it was the first time an incumbent senator lost a primary election in over a decade. With a background as a physician, Cassidy was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2008 and later won his first Senate race in 2014.
In a recent interview with NBC News, Cassidy stated, “I’m focused on the now and the future. If you want somebody delivering for our state, to make Louisiana a place where people move to set down roots, raise their children and grandchildren, I’m your guy.”
The Independent has reached out to Cassidy’s campaign for further comments. As the political scene in Louisiana continues to evolve, the focus remains on the future and the needs of the state’s residents.
