Defector-Turned-Lawmaker’s Assets Skyrocket After Marriage

The reported assets of Park Choong-kwon, a member of the People Power Party and a notable defector from North Korea, have experienced an astonishing surge, increasing nearly 60-fold within a single year. This dramatic financial leap has captured significant public attention and scrutiny.

According to official disclosures of high-ranking officials’ assets by the National Assembly on March 26th, Park, who transitioned from defector to legislator, registered the highest asset growth rate among all National Assembly members. His reported assets have ballooned from 55,503,000 Korean won last year to an impressive 3.383878 billion Korean won this year, marking an approximate 60-fold increase.

The primary catalyst behind this remarkable financial expansion is attributed to Mr. Park’s recent marriage. In the “remarks” section of his asset declaration, he explicitly stated “additional assets due to marriage” as the reason for the substantial change.

Previously, Mr. Park’s financial profile was relatively modest. Until last year, he was recorded as un-housed, with his declared assets comprising solely of modest deposits, donations received, and a small allocation of virtual assets. However, his marriage in November of the previous year fundamentally reshaped his asset portfolio.

The latest asset declaration reveals a significantly diversified and substantial holdings. These include real estate valued at approximately 4.6 billion Korean won. This real estate portfolio, registered under his spouse’s name, encompasses apartments in prominent Seoul districts such as Seocho-gu and Jangwi-dong in Seongbuk-gu. Additionally, it includes two officetels and three neighborhood commercial facilities. Beyond property, new asset inclusions feature deposits amounting to around 200 million Korean won, stocks valued at approximately 150 million Korean won, and virtual assets, notably Bitcoin, estimated to be worth around 120 million Korean won. The acquisition of two Mercedes-Benz vehicles further underscores the significant increase in his reported wealth.

Adding another layer of public interest, Mr. Park became the son-in-law of a former Deputy Chief of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office. His father-in-law, a lawyer identified only as “A,” is reportedly a specialist in public security matters and is affiliated with the prominent Kim & Chang Law Firm following his retirement.

Mr. Park’s personal journey is as remarkable as his financial ascent. Born in Hamhung, North Korea, in 1986, he distinguished himself academically from a young age, graduating third in his class from Pyongyang First High School, an elite institution in North Korea. He pursued higher education, majoring in chemical engineering at the National Defense University before defecting to South Korea in 2009. His academic pursuits continued in South Korea, where he earned a Ph.D. in materials engineering through an integrated master’s-Ph.D. program at the prestigious Seoul National University. Following his doctorate, he embarked on a career as a researcher at Hyundai Steel. His political career began in December 2023 when he joined the People Power Party as a talent recruit. He subsequently secured a seat in the National Assembly as a proportional representative in the 2024 general election.
