Kenya Grapples with Deadly Floods as Torrential Rains Continue
Kenya is currently enduring a devastating period of torrential rainfall, which has resulted in widespread flash floods and a tragic loss of life. As of Sunday, authorities have confirmed that at least 81 people have perished this month due to the relentless storms. The downpour continues to batter large swathes of the country, exacerbating an already dire situation.
The cumulative number of fatalities has unfortunately risen to 81, according to a statement released by national police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga. He further detailed the extensive damage caused by the floods, stating, “Additionally, flash floods have swept through several areas, displacing approximately 2,690 families and causing widespread destruction of infrastructure and property.”
Nairobi Bears the Brunt of the Catastrophe
The nation’s capital, Nairobi, has emerged as the hardest-hit region, accounting for a significant portion of the casualties. A grim tally of 37 lives have been lost in Nairobi alone. The sheer force of the water has transformed urban landscapes, inundating homes and businesses.
In a stark illustration of the immediate danger, authorities issued an urgent plea on Friday night, calling for residents in several slum neighbourhoods located downstream from the Nairobi dam to evacuate. Local media reports indicated an imminent risk of flooding as escalating water levels threatened to breach the dam’s embankment. Fortunately, the dam has so far withstood the immense pressure.
The perilous conditions have led to further tragic incidents. In the town of Kiambu, situated on the outskirts of the capital, two individuals drowned overnight as floodwaters surged through the area. Simultaneously, in the western village of Kasaka, landslides triggered by the heavy rains buried numerous homes, resulting in the deaths of two more people, as reported by private broadcaster Citizen TV.
Forecast and Calls for Caution
The meteorological outlook offers little respite, with the rain currently forecast to persist until Tuesday. In light of this ongoing threat, authorities have issued a stern advisory, urging the public to exercise “extreme caution.”
The March rains have repeatedly turned Nairobi’s streets into treacherous, raging rivers, engulfing thousands of homes and commercial establishments. The scale of the devastation has led to considerable public outcry and calls for accountability. Critics have vociferously demanded the resignation of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who, upon taking office in 2022, had pledged to significantly improve the capital’s drainage systems and road infrastructure.
