Carlton’s Resilient Comeback in the Face of Adversity
Carlton interim coach Josh Fraser expressed pride in how the team responded to the departure of Michael Voss, culminating in a surprising victory over the Western Bulldogs. This win marked just their second of the AFL season and came at a crucial time for the struggling club. The Bulldogs’ defeat was further compounded by an injury to Bailey Williams, deepening their existing injury crisis.
The match saw Carlton secure a memorable 10.14 (74) to 9.8 (62) win, with the Blues scoring five unanswered goals in the final quarter. This late surge was a significant turnaround from their usual pattern of fading out in the latter stages of games. For the Blues, this victory was a much-needed morale boost, especially for their long-suffering fans.
Fraser acknowledged the disappointment within the playing group following Voss’ decision to step down after just over four seasons as head coach. He hinted that there was a strong determination among the players to end the club’s seven-game winless streak, just four days after Voss’ departure.
“We’ve had a reasonably tough time of it lately,” Fraser said post-game. “And then the events of this week impacted a lot of people, particularly the playing group who were so connected to Vossy (Michael Voss) and the staff who have so much admiration for him. So for us to regroup and galvanise and perform the way we did tonight, I think it’s a big step forward for the club.”
Carlton trailed by eight points at three-quarter time, but skipper Patrick Cripps led a remarkable fourth-quarter fightback. Cripps was instrumental in the decisive final term, finishing with 29 disposals overall. However, Fraser emphasized that the team’s defensive intensity was key to the victory.
“(The game) really relied on our pressure,” he added. “And I thought our appetite to close down their time and space, to take away their inside to our game, they’re a lead at it. So it really tested our ability to do that over four quarters.”
Bulldogs’ Injury Crisis Deepens
The Bulldogs’ injury crisis worsened when star wingman Bailey Williams suffered a hamstring injury before halftime. The team was already missing several regular players, including star forward Sam Darcy. Williams, who has been performing exceptionally well this season with over 21 disposals and nearly 7 marks per game, now faces a potential three to four-week absence.
“He’s been such an important player on the wing. You could tell straight away he felt it pop. Came to the bench, needed some assistance and that was it for him. He looks in some trouble.”
Williams joins a growing list of injured Bulldogs, including James O’Donnell (hamstring), Cody Weightman (knee), Tom Liberatore (concussion/knee), Tim English (concussion), and Sam Darcy. The Bulldogs are expected to welcome back O’Donnell in the coming weeks, which could help ease the burden on their defensive line.
