Mwaruwari’s Highlanders Face Growing Scrutiny After Fourth Consecutive Draw
The pressure is undeniably mounting on Benjani Mwaruwari, the new tactician at the helm of Highlanders Football Club. His tenure has been marred by a series of frustrating stalemates, with the latest being a goalless draw against Simba Bhora at Wadzanayi Stadium. This result marks Mwaruwari’s fourth consecutive match ending in a draw since taking charge of the Bulawayo giants, a trend that is beginning to test the patience of the club’s fervent fanbase.
Following initial draws against Bulawayo Chiefs, MWOS, and Dynamos in the season’s opening fixtures, supporters had harboured strong hopes for a decisive victory against Simba Bhora. However, the performance delivered by Highlanders was largely perceived as flat, lacking inspiration, and conspicuously devoid of attacking ideas. While the home crowd at Barbourfields Stadium had voiced their discontent in the previous match, resorting to throwing objects at the coach, the atmosphere in Shamva was characterised by a more subdued, yet palpable, sense of simmering frustration.
Despite the growing external noise and internal disappointment, Mwaruwari, a former Warriors captain and Manchester City striker, maintained a composed demeanour at the final whistle. He appeared unfazed by the mounting pressure, stating, “Not at all [feeling the pressure], especially when my boys are playing so well.” He elaborated on his perspective, highlighting the team’s performance while acknowledging the critical issue of scoring. “The only thing is that we’re not scoring enough to get maximum points. But for me, everything is positive. As a team, we have some areas that we need to correct, like moving the ball quicker… Once we are sorted in that area, we will be good.”
While Mwaruwari’s assessment pointed to a “well-performed” side, the reality on the pitch painted a different picture. The game was characterised by considerable effort and exertion, but a distinct lack of penetration and effectiveness in the final third.
Mpofu’s Home Ground Woes Continue
Across the technical area, Mandla Mpofu, the former Highlanders coach now leading Simba Bhora, was grappling with his own set of home-turf challenges. Mpofu has instilled a formidable away-day reputation in his Simba Bhora squad, securing victories against Triangle and TelOne. However, his record at Wadzanayi Stadium remains a work in progress, as the team is yet to secure a win on their home ground under his guidance.
Despite orchestrating a remarkable defensive record, with his team achieving four clean sheets in their four outings, Mpofu was far from celebrating the single point secured. He expressed his disappointment, lamenting, “It’s two points lost.” He further articulated his concerns, stating, “As much as we were supposed to take advantage, especially playing at home, to collect all the points… one worry that I have as a coach is that this is my second game at home and we haven’t collected three points. But if you look overall, it’s not going to be an easy league. This point could be precious going forward.”
A Match Defined by Defensive Prowess and Missed Opportunities
The encounter itself was a tense and tightly contested affair, with the goalkeepers emerging as the standout performers for both sides.
Simba Bhora’s Namibian contingent, Tevin Naweseb and Alferus Leevi, both found themselves in promising positions with clear sight of goal. However, their efforts were ultimately thwarted by the alert reflexes of Highlanders’ goalkeeper, Reward Muza. Similarly, Highlanders’ most significant scoring opportunities fell to Benjamin Adeogun and Never Rauzhi, but the crucial final touch, the element that would have translated potential into goals, remained elusive.
The second half introduced a dramatic turn of events for Simba Bhora’s debutant, John Samaneka. Introduced at the interval, the Namibian international quickly made an impact, nearly becoming an instant hero. His goal-bound shot, however, was expertly smothered by the vigilant Muza. Tragically, Samaneka’s promising debut was cut short after just 25 minutes when he was stretchered off the field with what is suspected to be a hamstring tear.
Despite a late surge of pressure from the home side, which included a spectacular save by Muza to deny Never Tigere, neither team managed to find the decisive breakthrough that would secure victory.
For Mwaruwari, the clock is ticking. The challenge now is to transform his team’s “positive play” into tangible three-point hauls before the patience of the Barbourfields faithful wears thin.
