FC Platinum Navigates Early Season Pressure After Draw

FC Platinum, a club with a proud history as four-time champions of the Premier Soccer League, finds itself under considerable pressure to deliver results in the nascent stages of the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season. Coach Joel Luphahla has openly acknowledged the weight of expectation following a return of five points from a possible twelve in their opening four fixtures.

This sentiment was underscored after their pulsating 2-2 draw against TelOne FC at Mandava Stadium. The encounter saw Tadiwa Muchenje and Garikai Dematsika finding the net for FC Platinum, while Bruno Mtigo and Blessing Mettebeck scored for “The Wifi Boys” from TelOne.

FC Platinum’s campaign thus far has been a mixed bag: a solitary victory against Manica Diamonds, two draws with FC Hunters and TelOne, and an opening-day loss to Ngezi Platinum Stars. This early-season form has intensified the spotlight on Luphahla, despite the league still being in its infancy.

“We’re under pressure,” Luphahla stated in his post-match assessment. “Playing four games for five points isn’t good enough for a big club like FC Platinum. I take full responsibility as the head coach, and I know I’ve got a lot of work to do. But I’m confident we’ll turn it around because of the team we have.”

He elaborated on the critical need for improved finishing, highlighting the stark contrast between their missed opportunities and the opposition’s clinicality. “We just need to finish our chances. If you miss opportunities, the opposition will capitalize on theirs – they had two chances and scored twice. We had plenty, but we didn’t score. These are the lessons we need to take, the painful lessons the boys need to learn.”

A Match of Fluctuating Fortunes

The match commenced with FC Platinum asserting immediate dominance. Their early lead came in the third minute, orchestrated by a fluid attacking sequence involving Emmanuel Dogbey and Garikai Dematsika, which left the TelOne defence exposed. Muchenje was on hand to tap in the opening goal.

However, TelOne FC responded swiftly, levelling the score approximately fifteen minutes later. Bruno Mtigo was the architect, capitalizing on a goalmouth scramble that ensued after FC Platinum’s failure to effectively clear their lines.

From that point, the game evolved into a keenly contested affair, with both sides showcasing impressive attacking intent. FC Platinum managed to regain the ascendancy towards the close of the first half. Garikai Dematsika scored their second goal from a corner-kick rebound, the ball finding its way through a crowded penalty area before he nudged it over the line. This ensured the four-time PSL champions held a half-time advantage.

TelOne Fights Back for a Share of the Spoils

The second half saw TelOne FC demonstrating resilience, ultimately securing a share of the points in the 84th minute. A well-delivered cross from Marvellous Chigumira was met by a header from Blessing Mettebeck, bringing the scoreline level.

Despite earning a point, their second of the season, TelOne coach Herbert Maruwa expressed dissatisfaction with the regularity of “soft goals” conceded by his team.

“It’s now a trend, we’re conceding a soft goal at home,” Maruwa commented. “Even today we conceded a soft goal. Going forward, the team’s gelling, I’m happy. It shows we’re on the right track. The fighting spirit was there, the zeal to play was there. Even the way we got the two goals, it was through hard work.”

Maruwa identified a specific area for improvement within his squad: “What I see is that the midfielders aren’t maturing. They’re playing with the power play, with the outplay, with the tempo. They’re getting bullied by the midfielders, and that’s not serving us well. But when we control the game, we manage to get the equaliser.”

The draw leaves both teams looking for greater consistency as the league season progresses. FC Platinum faces the challenge of revitalizing their championship credentials, while TelOne aims to address defensive frailties and harness the positive aspects of their fighting spirit. The early stages of the season promise further intrigue and tactical adjustments from both camps.
