Liverpool’s Recurring Tale: A Champions League Cost?

Wolves Deal Cruel Blow to Liverpool’s Champions League Hopes

The final whistle at Molineux signalled a familiar sting of late defeat for Liverpool, a recurring theme that is increasingly jeopardising their pursuit of Champions League qualification. For the second time in just four days, Wolverhampton Wanderers, already confirmed for a return to the Championship, delivered a late sucker punch, leaving Liverpool and their manager, Arne Slot, to rue a persistent problem. This latest setback follows a similar heart-breaking loss to Aston Villa, highlighting a concerning trend for a team with lofty ambitions.

Wolves, while heading for the second tier, have proven to be formidable opponents for the Premier League’s elite. Their victory over Liverpool at home is the latest in a string of impressive performances against teams vying for European football. For Arne Slot, the feeling was one of profound disappointment, a sense of déjà vu that has become all too common. Liverpool have etched their name into the Premier League record books for all the wrong reasons, becoming the first team in history to lose five matches in a season courtesy of goals conceded in the 90th minute or later. This pattern of late capitulations has seen them drop crucial points against Bournemouth, Manchester City, Fulham, and Leeds United, with an estimated nine points slipping through their grasp in added time alone.

Slot expressed his frustration, stating, “The three times we lost in the last 22 games were all three in extra time.” The nature of these defeats, often requiring a deflection or a moment of brilliance from the opposition, only amplifies the sense of misfortune. However, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was quick to deflect blame from luck, admitting, “I think it’s down to ourselves.” He elaborated on the team’s performance, describing it as “slow, we were predictable, sloppy in possession and [guilty of] wrong decision-making.” This candid assessment from the skipper suggests a deeper issue within the squad’s approach.

The defeat, while sealed in the dying moments, can be traced back to a sluggish start from Liverpool. Despite eventually increasing their tempo and seeing Mohamed Salah break a four-month Premier League goal drought, the team arguably did not do enough for large portions of the match. Wolves, initially, frustrated Liverpool with their disciplined and compact defensive setup, a solid block of four central midfielders and three centre-backs proving difficult to penetrate.

However, Wolves manager Rob Edwards, anticipating the game would open up, made astute substitutions that ultimately paid dividends. The breakthrough came from a well-worked move involving two of his replacements. Rodrigo Gomes, who had only been on the pitch for eight minutes, scored his second goal in as many games, following his decisive strike against Aston Villa. He was set up by fellow substitute Tolu Arokodare, who outmuscled Van Dijk before supplying Gomes to dink the ball over Alisson Becker.

Even after Salah’s equaliser, as Liverpool pushed forward in search of a winner, Wolves responded with a late surge of their own. A misplaced kick from Alisson led to Andre’s shot looping up off Joe Gomez, leaving the Liverpool goalkeeper helpless. The decisive touch, ironically, came from a player named Gomez, capping a memorable night for the home side. Slot lamented this goal, noting, “We conceded a deflected shot, which was not even a chance.”

This latest result leaves Liverpool facing the stark reality that their struggles against teams lower down the table could cost them a coveted top-five finish. This season has seen them slip up against Nottingham Forest and Wolves, and drop points in draws against Burnley and Leeds, collectively losing around 12 points in these encounters.

The brief moment of hope for Liverpool came when Mohamed Salah, in a flash of his renowned brilliance, managed to turn back the clock. Even when their powers may be waning, the truly great players can still summon moments of magic. Despite an otherwise ineffectual performance, Salah found a pocket of space and improvised a stunning finish with the outside of his left foot. Although goalkeeper Jose Sa got a hand to it, the ball nestled in the back of the net. This was Salah’s 253rd goal for Liverpool and his first in the Premier League since November.

However, perhaps this goal, and the team’s overall performance, summed up Liverpool’s current struggles. They had hit the woodwork twice, showcasing flashes of their attacking potential but failing to convert these opportunities. Just minutes before Salah’s goal, Rio Ngumoha’s low shot was brilliantly tipped onto the post by Sa. Earlier in the second half, a combination of Curtis Jones’s shoulder and Cody Gakpo’s boot diverted the ball onto the crossbar after Hugo Ekitike had flicked on a Salah corner. Given their recent success with set-pieces, Liverpool would have expected to capitalise on these chances.

Slot acknowledged this persistent issue, admitting, “What didn’t change in the last five, six seven games is that we struggle and find it very hard to score from open play chances that we do create.” The team also failed to create enough clear-cut opportunities. The introduction of Ngumoha, who came on at the 64-minute mark, was the earliest he has featured in the Premier League this season, suggesting a need for more attacking impetus from the bench. Cody Gakpo, starting the match, had an uninspired performance.

Wolves, on the other hand, finished the night, and perhaps their season, on a high. After managing only one win earlier in the campaign, they have now secured two in a single week. Rob Edwards, the jubilant Wolves manager, expressed his team’s resilience, stating, “We are showing we are not as bad as people thought.” His animated touchline celebrations, however, came at a physical cost, as he revealed, “It’s my groin this time… I’m falling apart.” While his pain was physical, the pain inflicted on Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations was purely emotional.
