Political Landscape Shifts as 2027 Elections Loom
Newspaper reports on Thursday, March 26, offered a detailed look into the evolving political landscape, with the upcoming 2027 general election taking center stage. A significant focus was placed on the potential involvement of former President Uhuru Kenyatta in strategies aimed at challenging President William Ruto’s administration.

The political realignments appear to be coalescing around key figures and regional strongholds, suggesting a dynamic shift in alliances and rivalries. Notably, recent developments indicate a potential reconciliation between prominent political figures, signaling a move towards unity within certain factions of the opposition.
A New Alliance in the Mt. Kenya Region
One of the day’s most compelling political narratives revolved around the apparent mending of fences between Jeremiah Kioni, the Deputy Party Leader of Jubilee, and Rigathi Gachagua, a key figure in the Deputy President’s camp. This development, as reported, could represent a significant turning point in the political control of the crucial Mt. Kenya region.
Kioni, who was previously a vocal critic of Gachagua, has now publicly embraced him, signaling a potential end to the long-standing political friction between the Jubilee party and Gachagua’s political base. This newfound camaraderie was underscored by Kioni’s statement: “Riggy G and I recently ate mbuzi together. And we are now in good terms. Wherever we will go, we will go as brothers because if we are divided, we will lose.”
Kioni went on to praise Gachagua as a significant political force, noting the widespread appeal of his “one term” slogan. He declared Gachagua as the de facto political leader for the Mt. Kenya region, stating, “For us here in the mountain, we have a leader and I don’t have to explain why. We sat down with him and agreed we must work together, particularly here in the mountain.”
Furthermore, Kioni issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region who had supported Gachagua’s impeachment. He characterized their actions as a betrayal of the community, asserting, “All they did in Parliament was betray Gachagua by voting for his impeachment. Nothing else matters. You betray this community, you are done. They will punish you on Election Day.”
Wider Opposition Consolidation
Adding another layer to this unfolding political drama, Fred Matiang’i has reportedly joined forces with the Jubilee party and Gachagua’s faction. This collaboration is marked by the opening of party offices in Nyeri. Matiang’i was quoted as saying, “I have even informed Gachagua that I am here because we are in one team. Some people are uneasy because in the last two weeks we have joined hands with Gachagua, Kalonzo and Martha (Karua), and the whole united opposition. I am declaring that I am going to work with Gachagua.”
These interconnected developments strongly suggest a deliberate and coordinated strategy involving former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Rigathi Gachagua, and their respective allies. The primary objective appears to be the consolidation of the Mt. Kenya vote bloc and a concerted effort to counter President William Ruto’s influence as the 2027 elections draw nearer. The intricate dance of alliances and rivalries underscores the high stakes involved in the political maneuvering leading up to the next general election.
