Hamzah Zainudin Remains Bersatu Deputy President Amidst Internal Party Tensions

Kuala Lumpur, February 9 — Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin continues to hold the position of Deputy President within the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu), at least for the present moment. This assurance comes from an elected representative who participated in a recent gathering with Bersatu President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Kota Siputeh state assemblyman Ashraf Mustaqim Badrul Munir confirmed the situation when approached outside the former Prime Minister’s residence in Bukit Damansara, stating, “Hamzah hasn’t been sacked yet.”

The meeting, held last night, saw over 30 Bersatu elected representatives and senior party leaders convene at Muhyiddin’s home. This assembly took place against a backdrop of escalating tensions within the party’s top leadership.

Notable attendees at the gathering included Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali, alongside Vice-Presidents Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu and Datuk Mohd Radzi Jidin.

According to information from a Bersatu source, the meeting comprised more than 20 state assemblymen, four Members of Parliament, and several members of the party’s supreme leadership council. However, it was observed that individuals reportedly aligned with Hamzah Zainudin were notably absent from the proceedings.

Sources suggest that those within Hamzah’s faction had opted to boycott the gathering. One Member of Parliament corroborated this, confirming that elected representatives who support Hamzah had collectively decided not to attend the event. “Those who were present are Muhyiddin’s staunch supporters,” the MP remarked.

Further details indicate that a planned special meeting for last night had to be reconfigured into a more informal gathering due to a lower-than-expected confirmation of attendance, with only 18 elected representatives having confirmed their participation.

There is an understanding that disciplinary action may be considered against those who did not attend the convened meeting.

The reported circumstances surrounding last night’s gathering are understood to be connected to recent developments concerning Hamzah Zainudin. It has been suggested that Hamzah was summoned to appear before the party’s disciplinary board. This summons was reportedly to facilitate an investigation into allegations of his involvement in disruptive incidents that occurred during the party’s annual general assembly, as well as accusations of attacks directed at President Muhyiddin Yassin.

The internal dynamics within Bersatu appear to be at a critical juncture, with these developments highlighting a clear division among key party figures. The absence of Hamzah’s supporters from the meeting underscores the existing rifts and raises questions about the future leadership structure and stability of the party. The disciplinary board’s investigation, if it proceeds, could have significant implications for Hamzah’s standing and the broader political landscape within Bersatu.

The gathering at Muhyiddin’s residence, while intended to address internal party matters, ultimately served to showcase the current alignment of forces within Bersatu. The participation of a significant number of elected representatives and senior leaders, all identified as staunch supporters of the party president, signals a consolidation of power around Muhyiddin’s leadership. The absence of a substantial bloc of party members, presumably those loyal to Hamzah, points towards a deepening schism that the party leadership will need to navigate carefully.

The decision to reconvene the meeting in a less formal capacity due to attendance numbers further suggests the sensitive nature of the issues being discussed and perhaps a strategic move to gauge support more discreetly. The potential for disciplinary action against absentees adds another layer of pressure and underscores the seriousness with which the party leadership views the current situation and the need for unified support.

The allegations against Hamzah Zainudin, particularly those related to disrupting the annual general assembly and undermining the party president, are serious and could lead to significant consequences if proven. The disciplinary board’s role in investigating these claims is crucial in upholding the party’s internal regulations and maintaining its image. The outcome of this investigation will undoubtedly be closely watched by party members and the wider political fraternity in Malaysia.

The current situation within Bersatu highlights the perpetual challenges faced by political parties in managing internal dissent and maintaining cohesion, especially during periods of political transition or heightened competition. The coming days and weeks will likely reveal more about the trajectory of these internal party matters and their impact on Bersatu’s political standing.
