Consecrated Leaders Urged Towards Selfless Service for Transformational Change
A significant joint congress convened by the Regional Conference of Major Superiors of West Africa (RECOMSWA) and the Africa Religious Union – Ghana (ARUG) recently took place at Christian Village, Santasi, Kumasi, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. The gathering served as a powerful reminder to leaders across all sectors of society, particularly consecrated men and women, about the profound value of selfless service as the bedrock of transformational leadership.
The core message resonated throughout the three-day conference, themed “Consecrated Life for Transformation: Safeguarding, Transformative Leadership, Witnesses of Hope.” Participants were strongly encouraged to embody leadership not through dominance or control, but through an unwavering commitment to serving humanity, thereby fostering genuine and lasting change.
The distinguished assembly comprised a wide array of influential figures, including bishops, archbishops, reverend fathers, sisters and brothers, traditional rulers (Nananom), and representatives from local government authorities. This diverse group underscores the broad societal impact and relevance of the discussions held.
The Essence of Transformational Leadership
A pivotal keynote address, delivered on behalf of Rev. Sr. Simona Brambilla, Prefect of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, delved into the sub-theme “Consecrated Life for Transformation and Hope.” Drawing inspiration from the teachings of Jesus Christ, the address powerfully reiterated the admonition that “whoever must be leader among you must be servant of all.”
The address underscored that authentic leadership stems from humility, a spirit of service, and a willingness to sacrifice for the well-being of others, rather than a pursuit of personal authority or power. Rev. Sr. Brambilla emphasized that individuals called to exercise authority can only achieve success if they earnestly seek the will of God with deep conviction and righteousness. “Without being rooted in Christ, there can be no authentic transformation,” she stated unequivocally.
Furthermore, the concept of transformational leadership was highlighted as a force that promotes co-responsibility, ensuring that both leaders and followers are equally accountable for achieving shared objectives. The church, it was noted, places immense confidence in the consecrated men and women of Africa, envisioning them as vital safe havens in a troubled world, servant leaders navigating times of confusion, and beacons of hope in a dynamic global landscape.
RECOMSWA: A Pillar of Consecrated Life in West Africa
Father Paul Saa-Dade Ennin, President of RECOMSWA, provided crucial background and delivered the opening address, articulating the mission of the organization. RECOMSWA, serving as the overarching body for all conferences of Consecrated Life within the West African sub-region, is dedicated to ensuring that consecrated life remains a prophetic, credible, and transformative presence within both the church and the wider society.
The organization actively works to strengthen consecrated life across West Africa through various initiatives, including robust formation programs, fostering collaboration, prioritizing safeguarding, developing leadership skills, and building resilient ecclesial structures.
Father Ennin also revealed the extensive reach of RECOMSWA, which encompasses 15 national conferences of Major Superiors. These include representation from Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, la Cote d’Ivoire, Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, and Ghana. He expressed his profound gratitude to the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious-Ghana and the Archdiocese of Kumasi for their gracious hospitality in hosting the congress.
The Timely Call to Witness and Service
Most Rev. Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, lauded the congress theme as both timely and compelling. He asserted that the theme directly addresses the prophetic vocation of consecrated men and women in their response to the multifaceted spiritual, social, and moral challenges of our era.
Bishop Gyamfi highlighted that through unwavering witness, dedicated service, and a radical commitment to the Gospel, consecrated life continues to play an indispensable role in the profound transformation of individuals, communities, and entire nations. He further noted that the joint congress, by bringing together Major Superiors and religious leaders from Ghana, West Africa, and beyond, serves as a powerful affirmation of the enduring and invaluable contributions of religious institutes to evangelization, education, healthcare, social justice, and the integral development of humanity.
A Renewed Zeal for Integral Human Development
In a goodwill message delivered by Sr. Lucy Hometu, President of the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious-Ghana (CSMR-GH), the general assembly was described as a valuable platform for deepening communion among their respective institutes. It provides a crucial opportunity to learn from diverse experiences and collectively discern innovative responses to the evolving signs of the times. “We trust that your deliberations will lead to renewed zeal and concrete pathways for strengthening Religious Life and its contribution to evangelization and integral human development,” she stated.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Frank Amoakohene, also conveyed a goodwill message, emphasizing the historical significance of religious men and women as potent agents of transformation throughout Africa, and indeed, Ghana. He recalled their pioneering role in establishing the first schools that educated national leaders, founding hospitals, and extending vital assistance to the poor and marginalized. The Minister affirmed that the legacy of these religious individuals continues to shape the moral and intellectual fabric of Ghanaian society. He concluded by reiterating the commitment of the Regional Coordinating Council and the Government of Ghana to strengthening collaboration with Faith-Based Organizations in their efforts to advance education, empower youth, and support vulnerable communities.
