An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to an engineer facing charges of allegedly stealing two vehicles from a car rental company. The accused, Desmond Peprah, was granted bail in the sum of GH¢100,000.00, with the condition that he provide three sureties, one of whom must be a public servant earning a minimum of GH¢3,000.00.

The court has also imposed strict reporting conditions on Peprah. He is required to report to the police three times a week, specifically on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Furthermore, he is prohibited from leaving the jurisdiction of the court without prior permission.

The prosecution has been directed to file all necessary disclosures at least two clear days before April 29, 2026, in preparation for a Case Management Conference.

Allegations and Circumstances

According to Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong, the complainant in this case is Mr. Ebenezer Azamatey, the Chief Executive Officer of Ebenzam Car Rentals and Tours. Mr. Azamatey resides in Teshie. The accused, Desmond Peprah, is identified as an engineer employed by Zhomai Company Limited and resides in Obuasi.

The prosecution alleges that on February 17, 2026, between the hours of 06:30 and 07:00, Peprah visited Azamatey’s office in Teshie. During this visit, he rented a Toyota Highlander, bearing registration number GR 1310-26, for a period of one week.

Following the rental of the first vehicle, Peprah allegedly returned to the car rental company. This time, he rented a second vehicle, a Mitsubishi Outlander, with registration number GR 2390-25. However, he failed to return this vehicle as per the agreed terms.

Apprehension and Investigation

The complainant, Mr. Azamatey, reportedly took steps to locate Peprah and the missing vehicles. On March 10, 2026, Azamatey successfully traced Peprah to Mankesim. It was in Mankesim that Peprah was apprehended, and the Toyota Highlander was recovered.

The following day, March 11, 2026, Mr. Azamatey handed Peprah over to the Teshie Police to facilitate further investigations into the matter.

During the interrogation process, Peprah allegedly confessed to having given the Mitsubishi Outlander to his brother, identified as Collins Nti. Despite this admission, Peprah reportedly failed to cooperate with the police in locating his brother and the whereabouts of the second vehicle.

The court was informed that Peprah was brought before the court within the stipulated 48-hour period following his arrest, as the investigation into the alleged theft of the vehicles was ongoing.

Legal Proceedings and Future Steps

The granting of bail signifies that the court has considered the initial evidence presented and has determined that the accused can be released pending further proceedings, subject to strict conditions. The bail amount and the requirement for justified sureties are standard legal procedures designed to ensure the accused’s appearance in court. The inclusion of a public servant as a surety often aims to provide an additional layer of accountability.

The reporting conditions imposed on Peprah are intended to monitor his movements and prevent any potential attempts to abscond or interfere with the investigation. The prohibition on leaving the court’s jurisdiction underscores the seriousness of the charges and the court’s commitment to ensuring the legal process is followed.

The directive for the prosecution to file disclosures well in advance of the Case Management Conference is crucial for the fair progression of the trial. This allows the defense ample time to review the evidence against their client, prepare their case, and ensure all legal requirements are met. The Case Management Conference itself will serve as an important juncture to streamline the proceedings, identify any potential issues, and set a clear path towards a resolution, whether through a plea bargain or a full trial.

The charges against Desmond Peprah revolve around the alleged theft of two vehicles. The prosecution will need to establish beyond a reasonable doubt that Peprah unlawfully took possession of both vehicles with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of them. The defense, on the other hand, will aim to challenge the prosecution’s evidence, present alternative explanations, or argue for the innocence of the accused. The ongoing investigation into the whereabouts of the Mitsubishi Outlander and the involvement of Collins Nti will likely play a significant role in the unfolding legal proceedings. The court’s ultimate decision will depend on the strength of the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defense.
