National Service Authority to Implement Mandatory Military Orientation Programme
Tema, Ghana – The National Service Authority (NSA) is set to launch a comprehensive, mandatory military orientation programme for all national service personnel across Ghana, commencing in July 2026. This significant initiative, designed to foster discipline, nationalism, and civic responsibility among young graduates, will initially welcome a cohort of 10,000 participants.
Ms. Ruth Dela Seddoh, the Director-General of the NSA, announced this pivotal development during a recent passing-out ceremony for 40 National Service Personnel (NSPs) who had been assigned to TDC Ghana Limited. The ceremony itself was a testament to the programme’s effectiveness, with the graduating personnel completing a rigorous two-week intensive military orientation at the First Infantry Battalion (1BN) at Michel Camp. This group comprised 22 males and 18 females.
Ms. Seddoh clarified that the upcoming nationwide programme has already undergone a successful pilot phase, demonstrating its potential to positively shape the character of service personnel. The ultimate aim is to cultivate individuals who are not only productive members of society but also deeply responsible citizens.
Contrary to any potential misinterpretations, Ms. Seddoh stressed that the orientation is not intended to militarise the nation’s youth. Instead, it is a strategic endeavour to equip them with essential life skills that will serve them well in their professional careers and personal lives.
Key Objectives of the Military Orientation Programme:
- Instilling Discipline: A core focus is to cultivate a strong sense of order, self-control, and adherence to rules.
- Fostering National Pride: The programme aims to enhance a sense of patriotism and commitment to the nation’s progress.
- Promoting Physical Fitness: Participants will engage in activities designed to improve their physical health and stamina.
- Developing Leadership Skills: The orientation will provide opportunities to nurture leadership qualities and the ability to guide others.
- Enhancing Time Management: Personnel will learn to effectively manage their time, a crucial skill for productivity.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response: A vital component includes training in how to react effectively during emergencies, a skill valuable in both professional settings and public service.
The Director-General drew a connection between this initiative and the broader national agenda, referencing the 2025–2026 State of the Nation Address. In that address, President John Dramani Mahama underscored the critical role of such programmes in preparing the youth for their contributions to national development.
Ms. Seddoh extended her commendations to Mr. Courage Nunekpeku, the Managing Director of TDC Ghana Limited, for his forward-thinking approach in initiating this orientation for personnel assigned to his organisation. She expressed considerable satisfaction with the performance of the trainees from TDC Ghana Limited, noting that their proficiency in executing complex drills within a constrained timeframe was a clear indicator of their dedication and acquired discipline.
“I am particularly excited about this initiative,” Ms. Seddoh stated, “and I want to assure TDC that next year we are likely to increase the number of personnel posted here because we expect to have more disciplined young people.” This sentiment highlights the anticipated positive impact on the quality of service personnel provided to partner organisations.
Furthermore, Ms. Seddoh acknowledged and expressed her sincere appreciation to the Military High Command and the First Infantry Battalion for their invaluable support and collaboration in the successful implementation of the orientation programme.
Addressing the graduating personnel directly, Ms. Seddoh urged them to embody the discipline and skills they had acquired in their daily work and personal lives. “You are already a success,” she encouraged them. “Move into the world and make your presence felt everywhere.”
The training received by the 40 personnel covered a broad spectrum of essential skills, including:
- Physical fitness routines
- Drill and ceremonial procedures
- Principles of responsible citizenship
- Basic first aid techniques
- Work ethics and professional conduct
This mandatory orientation programme signifies a proactive step by the National Service Authority to ensure that young Ghanaians entering their period of national service are well-equipped with the foundational attributes necessary for both personal growth and meaningful contribution to the nation’s development. The emphasis on discipline, leadership, and civic responsibility is expected to yield a generation of more capable and committed citizens.
