Nollywood Actor Defends Convicted Colleague Amidst Renewed Controversy

A prominent figure in the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood actor Yomi Fabiyi, has reignited a debate surrounding the conviction of his peer, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, widely recognised by his stage name Baba Ijesha. Fabiyi has once again publicly asserted his defence of the convicted actor, maintaining his controversial stance on the 2021 incident that led to Baba Ijesha’s imprisonment.

In a recent online broadcast, Fabiyi reiterated his assertion that the events of 2021 should be interpreted as a form of “play” rather than a criminal act of sexual violence. Speaking in the Yoruba language, he emphatically stated that Baba Ijesha harboured no intent to rape the minor involved. Fabiyi further argued that the severity of the actions leading to Baba Ijesha’s incarceration was, in his view, not as grave as widely perceived.

Fabiyi elaborated on his perspective during the livestream, stating, “There was no intention to rape. Baba Ijesha just wanted to play with the girl and kiss her quickly because he knew the homeowner would be back soon. He just wanted to kiss the girl and play with her breasts. We will continue to stand against selective justice and abuse of fundamental rights.” This statement underscores his ongoing conviction that Baba Ijesha was subjected to a miscarriage of justice, framing the incident as a misconstrued interaction.

The case itself garnered significant public attention due to its sensitive nature and the involvement of well-known personalities. The victim in this instance was the 14-year-old foster daughter of comedienne Damilola Adekoya, known professionally as Princess. The incident was notably captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, which served as crucial evidence during the subsequent high-profile legal proceedings. This visual evidence played a pivotal role in the trial, contributing to the conviction of Baba Ijesha.

Fabiyi’s renewed defence has sparked considerable discussion and criticism within the Nigerian entertainment sphere and among the general public. Critics of Fabiyi’s position argue that his defence minimises the gravity of sexual assault and disrespects the victim’s experience. They point to the overwhelming evidence, including the CCTV footage, that supported the court’s findings. The debate highlights a broader societal conversation about:

  • The definition and perception of sexual assault: Fabiyi’s framing of the incident as “play” is directly at odds with legal definitions and common understanding of sexual offenses. This raises questions about how consent, intent, and power dynamics are understood, particularly within public discourse.
  • The role of public figures in sensitive cases: When public figures like actors comment on criminal cases, especially those involving sexual violence, their words can carry significant weight and influence public opinion. This places a responsibility on them to be mindful of the impact of their statements.
  • The importance of evidence-based justice: The reliance on CCTV footage in this case underscores the significance of empirical evidence in legal proceedings. Fabiyi’s defence appears to discount or reframe this evidence.
  • The concept of selective justice: Fabiyi’s mention of “selective justice” suggests a belief that Baba Ijesha was unfairly targeted or that the legal system is applied inconsistently. This is a serious accusation that typically requires substantial evidence to substantiate.

The legal outcome for Baba Ijesha was a conviction, a decision reached by the court based on the presented evidence. However, Yomi Fabiyi’s persistent advocacy for his colleague suggests that the controversy surrounding the case and its interpretation is far from over. His public statements continue to challenge the established narrative, inviting further scrutiny and debate on the nuances of justice, public perception, and the responsibilities of those in the public eye. The differing perspectives on this case reflect the complex and often deeply personal nature of navigating issues of sexual violence and its aftermath within a society.
