The atmosphere in Abeokuta, the state capital, was electric as the president toured the region, commissioning several key developments.

The president’s visit came at a crucial time, following his recent trip to Jos, Plateau State, where he witnessed the devastating effects of terrorism. This experience left him visibly shaken, and he vowed to work tirelessly to improve Nigeria’s security situation. However, the rescheduled visit to Ogun State provided a much-needed lift, showcasing the potential of visionary leadership and effective governance.

A State on the Rise

Before the president’s arrival, the mood in Ogun was already ecstatic. Social media was flooded with images of modern hospitals, renovated roads, and the state-of-the-art Gateway International Airport, which the president was set to commission.

Governor Abiodun had been extremely active in rolling out various projects across the state. Between January and February, he commissioned several strategic road projects, including the Abeokuta-Obalende Road and the Sagamu-Ayepe Road, among others. These projects were selected through community-driven prioritisation, ensuring that they met the needs of the people.

A Range of Developments

In the aviation and transport sector, he commissioned the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, along with the state’s new airline, Gateway Airline, and its two newly acquired aircraft. The president also inaugurated logistics and trade infrastructure, including the Nigeria Customs Service’s ₦73bn hub, which features a residential barracks, training college, warehouse, and hospital.

In addition, the president launched mobility, security, and agriculture assets, such as 1,000 electric motorcycles (EV bikes) and 80 units of security vehicles. These initiatives reflect a commitment to sustainable development and modern transportation solutions.

A Gathering of Leaders

The event was attended by a host of prominent figures, including the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, governors from various states, former presidents, and business leaders. The presence of these influential individuals underscored the significance of the projects being commissioned.

He spoke about the Gateway International Airport, which has a 4km runway, control tower, and cargo facilities, designed as an aerotropolis. The state-owned airline, Gateway Air, was also introduced, with two Bombardier CRJ 900 aircraft and several scheduled flights.

In terms of infrastructure, the governor mentioned the construction of 1,600km of roads, including the Epe Ijebu Ode expressway and the Sagamu Interchange-Papalanto Expressway. He also highlighted the development of housing, healthcare, and agricultural projects, including the Muhammadu Buhari Estate and the 200-bed Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence.
