Tragedy Strikes Baitadi Village: Wedding Bus Plunge Claims 13 Lives
A somber silence has descended upon Bhauni village, located in ward 7 of Purchaudi Municipality, since Thursday evening. What was a scene of joyous celebration just hours before, filled with the sounds of wedding music and laughter, has been transformed into a landscape of profound grief. A devastating bus accident, involving a wedding party returning from a ceremony, has resulted in the tragic loss of 13 lives, with fears that the number of fatalities may yet increase.
The ill-fated journey began earlier on Thursday, as a bus and a jeep transported wedding guests from Naunsa village in Bitthadchir Rural Municipality, Bajhang, to Girjhabagar Bus Park in Purchaudi. Upon arrival around noon, the wedding party disembarked and proceeded to Bhauni village, a short 10-minute walk away, to complete the traditional wedding rituals. Following the ceremony, the group, accompanied by the bride, began their return journey to the bus park. Several local residents also joined the passengers on the bus for the trip back.
While the groom, bride, a select group of wedding guests, and the bride’s brother travelled in the jeep, the bus was reportedly overcrowded with wedding guests and local villagers. Amarraj Joshi, the bride’s uncle, recounted the perilous conditions on the bus. He was standing near the rear door due to the lack of available seating.
“The bus was full,” Joshi stated, his voice heavy with the memory of that day. “Since some people were supposed to get off along the way, I was standing by the door.”
The situation took a catastrophic turn approximately 8 to 9 kilometres beyond Girjhabagar, in an area known as Badgaun, within ward 7. As the bus navigated a bend in the road, Joshi sensed a subtle change in its momentum.
“I felt the bus slow down slightly at the bend,” he recalled. “When I looked outside, I saw it rolling backwards towards the edge of the road. Realising it was about to fall, I pushed others standing at the door and jumped out.”
His desperate leap for survival saw him land on the roadside and tumble approximately 15 metres down a steep slope. Miraculously, he managed to cling to a tree, an act that ultimately saved his life. “That tree saved my life,” he asserted, his gratitude palpable. “When I regained consciousness, I was already taken home.”
The immediate aftermath of his survival was marked by the devastating news that many of his fellow wedding guests had perished in the crash. The horrific scenes that unfolded continue to haunt him. “That scene still haunts me,” Joshi confessed, his voice trembling. “It should never have happened. It is deeply painful.”
According to information released by the District Police Office in Baitadi, the confirmed death toll currently stands at 13. Authorities are bracing for the possibility that this grim figure may rise as rescue and recovery efforts continue. The entire community is grappling with the shock and sorrow of this profound tragedy, which has cast a dark shadow over what should have been a joyous occasion.
