Leading PDP Aspirant Expresses Condolences Over Tragic Ibadan Road Accident

Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, a prominent aspirant for the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, has extended his heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident in Ibadan on Tuesday. The accident, which involved a trailer carrying a substantial load of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), has sent shockwaves through the community, exacerbating the somber mood just days after Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.

Ambassador Ajadi also conveyed his condolences to the Oyo State government for the profound loss of life. He voiced a fervent prayer that such a calamitous event will not befall the state again.

The incident, which occurred in the bustling Fruits Market along the Oje-Beere route in Ibadan, resulted in the deaths of approximately six individuals. Among the fatalities was a motorcyclist, underscoring the vulnerability of road users to such catastrophic events. The trailer, reportedly carrying 45,000 litres of PMS, lost control, leading to a chain reaction that tragically impacted several tricycles and their occupants. Numerous other individuals sustained serious injuries, receiving urgent medical attention.

In a statement personally signed on Wednesday, Ambassador Ajadi reflected on the immense difficulty of bearing such a loss so soon after a period of joyous celebration. He acknowledged the bravery and efficiency of the security and rescue officials who responded swiftly to the scene, working diligently to assist those affected.

He offered prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for the swift and complete recovery of all those who were injured and are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

The aspirant used the tragic event as a stark reminder of the persistent dangers posed by street trading. He noted with sadness that despite ongoing efforts by both state and local authorities to curb the practice, the accident highlighted a concerning disregard for directives aimed at public safety. Ambassador Ajadi observed that a significant number of the victims were individuals engaged in buying and selling activities on the streets, directly caught in the path of the disaster.

He urged the state government to maintain and even intensify its commitment to eradicating street trading. Ambassador Ajadi emphasized that the tragic loss of life underscores the critical need for decisive action to prevent such preventable tragedies in the future. The accident serves as a grim testament to the potential consequences when regulations designed to protect citizens are not adhered to.

The incident has reignited discussions about urban planning, traffic management, and public safety regulations within Ibadan. Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding the accident to identify any systemic failures and implement measures to prevent recurrence. The focus now shifts not only to supporting the victims and their families but also to reinforcing safety protocols across the city, particularly in high-traffic and market areas. The collective hope is that this tragedy will serve as a catalyst for meaningful change and improved safety for all residents of Oyo State.
