Millions Tune into ‘All-American’ Halftime Show, Opting for Alternative to NFL’s Main Event

In a significant shift in viewer preference during the Super Bowl on Sunday night, a substantial number of American football fans reportedly turned away from the official NFL halftime show, featuring Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, to instead tune into Turning Point USA’s “All-American Halftime Show.” The NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny, whose performances are primarily in Spanish, proved to be a polarizing decision for a segment of its audience, leading many to switch their viewing platforms to YouTube and Rumble.

The alternative event, organised by Turning Point USA, saw a star-studded lineup that included rock icon Kid Rock, alongside country music artists Brantley Gilbert, Lee Brice, and Gabby Barrett. This “MAGA” halftime show aimed to provide a different flavour of entertainment for viewers seeking an alternative to the mainstream broadcast.

Initially, plans were in place for the “All-American Halftime Show” to also be streamed on X. However, these plans were reportedly thrown into disarray just minutes before the show was scheduled to commence, with the stream being abruptly pulled. Turning Point USA later issued a statement explaining the situation: “UPDATE: Due to licensing restrictions, we are unable to stream The All-American Halftime Show on X. Head on over to our YouTube channel tonight around 8PM ET to watch the full show.”

This directive was heeded by a considerable audience. The YouTube stream for the alternative halftime show reportedly peaked at an impressive figure of over 5 million viewers midway through the broadcast, indicating a strong appetite for the content offered.

The “All-American Halftime Show” commenced with a dedication, with the host reportedly stating, “this one’s for you Charlie,” in honour of Turning Point USA’s late founder, Charlie Kirk, who was tragically assassinated in September. This was followed by a rendition of “The Stars and Stripes,” which, according to reports, was met with enthusiasm from viewers. During this segment, the stream count reportedly climbed to over 3 million concurrent viewers, highlighting the engagement with what was being billed as “Real America” in action.

The musical performances unfolded with Brantley Gilbert taking the stage to perform for a select live audience. He was followed by Gabby Barrett, whose vocal performance was described as captivating. Lee Brice then brought his signature country sound to the event.

The show’s headline act was Kid Rock, who delivered a performance of his popular hits. This appearance was particularly noted by fans who had opted out of watching Bad Bunny, Lady Gaga, and other performers on the main NBC Super Bowl coverage. Kid Rock’s performance reportedly began with him in casual attire, embodying his “Kid Rock” persona, before he was introduced by his real name, Robert Ritchie, for a more stripped-back acoustic set.

Social media platforms buzzed with reactions to the alternative halftime show. Many viewers expressed their satisfaction, with one widely shared comment stating: “Didn’t even watch the stupid Bad Bunny halftime, I’m watching the awesome halftime show Turning Point is putting on with Kid Rick and Gabby Barrett and Brantley Gilbert real American s***.” Another user echoed this sentiment, asking, “Did anyone actually watch Bad Bunny? Turning Point for me. Kid Rock!”

The conclusion of the “All-American Halftime Show” featured a poignant tribute. As the cameras panned out from Kid Rock and his guitar, images were displayed of Charlie Kirk, his wife Erika, and their children, accompanied by the inscription: “In Remembrance of Charlie Kirk.”

Earlier in the week, Kid Rock had addressed his fans, framing the competition with the NFL’s official halftime show as a “David and Goliath” scenario. He had remarked, “Competing with the pro football machine and a global pop superstar is almost impossible… or is it?”

A spokesman for Turning Point USA, Andrew Kolvet, had previously stated to Fox News that “The All-American Halftime Show is an opportunity for all Americans to enjoy a halftime show with no agenda other than to celebrate faith, family, and freedom.” He added, “We can’t wait to watch the incredible show they’re about to put on. We know millions around the country will be watching too.”

The selection of Bad Bunny for the official Super Bowl halftime show had drawn significant criticism from a portion of the fanbase. Former President Donald Trump was among those who voiced his disapproval, stating to Newsmax, “I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why they’re doing it. It’s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment. I think it’s absolutely ridiculous.”

The late Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was a prominent conservative figure. His widow, Erika, has publicly committed to continuing his legacy and promoting his message following his assassination. In a video released days after his death, she conveyed a powerful message: “The evildoers responsible for my husband’s assassination have no idea what they have done. They killed Charlie because he preached a message of patriotism, faith and of God’s merciful love. If you thought that my husband’s mission was powerful before, you have no idea. You have no idea what you just have unleashed across this entire country and this world.”

Bad Bunny himself has been an outspoken critic of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and has previously cited concerns about his Latino fans potentially facing detention as a reason for avoiding scheduling U.S. tour dates.
