Gary Sweet’s Shocking Revelation: A “Horrible” Blind Date with Elle Macpherson
Australian actor Gary Sweet, a familiar face on our screens for decades, has dropped a bombshell during his stint on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The seasoned performer revealed to his fellow campmates that he once went on a blind date with none other than Australian supermodel Elle Macpherson, and to everyone’s surprise, he found the entire experience to be rather dismal.
The unexpected confession unfolded during a candid campfire chat, a common occurrence on the reality show where celebrities often share personal anecdotes. The conversation initially veered towards awkward celebrity encounters when former Neighbours star Rebekah Elmaloglou recounted a less-than-pleasant run-in she’d had with Macpherson. This prompted Gary to chime in, piquing the curiosity of his fellow contestants. Rebekah, sensing a story brewing, posed the question that was likely on everyone’s mind: did Gary have a similar tale to share?
“I had a blind date one night,” Gary admitted, his casual delivery immediately bringing the conversation to a halt. The revelation hung in the air, leaving his campmates visibly stunned by the sheer audacity of the situation – a blind date with a global fashion icon.
When comedian Concetta Caristo, ever the inquisitive one, inquired about the quality of the date, Gary didn’t hold back. His response was brutally honest, leaving no room for ambiguity. “No! It was horrible,” he declared, much to the astonishment of the others.
The Logie winner elaborated on the unfortunate encounter, explaining that the date had been arranged for a dinner in Perth many years ago. However, from Gary’s perspective, any potential sparks failed to ignite almost from the outset. He described the conversation as falling flat, a consequence of discovering a profound lack of common ground between them.
“I asked if she read books — no,” Gary recounted, detailing his attempts to find a shared interest. “Asked about movies – she doesn’t go to the movies.” These simple questions, intended to build rapport, only served to highlight their disparate tastes and lifestyles, leading to an increasingly awkward atmosphere.
The discomfort, according to Sweet, only escalated from there. He painted a picture of an uncomfortable silence descending upon their table, a void that became so palpable he found himself desperately seeking an opportune moment to make a swift exit. Joking about the situation, he mimicked his imagined escape: “[Awkward silence and tapping]… dessert! Thanks, see ya later!” His lighthearted recounting of the escape plan only amplified the disbelief among his campmates.
The other celebrities on I’m A Celebrity found it hard to fathom how Gary could be so nonchalant about dismissing a date with one of the most recognisable supermodels in the world. AFL legend Dyson Heppell perfectly encapsulated the general sentiment, finding humour in Gary’s remarkably laid-back delivery.
“He just drops it like it’s nothing – ‘Oh yeah, I went on a blind date with Elle Macpherson. No biggie,’” Heppell remarked with a laugh, shaking his head in amusement. He added with a grin, “Good on ya, Gaz.” The sheer contrast between the potential star power of the date and Gary’s apparent lack of enthusiasm provided a moment of unexpected entertainment for the viewers and his fellow contestants alike. It seems that even for a seasoned actor, not every star-studded encounter is destined for Hollywood romance, and sometimes, even a date with a supermodel can be a complete washout.
