University of Abuja Elevates 21 Academics to Professorial Ranks
The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now officially recognized as Yakubu Gowon University, has formally approved the promotion of 21 distinguished academic staff members to professorial ranks. This significant milestone was achieved under the chairmanship of Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, as confirmed by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, in a statement issued on Sunday.
The announcement detailed that 16 senior academics have been elevated to the esteemed rank of Professor, while an additional five have been promoted to the position of Associate Professor. These promotions span a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, reflecting the university’s commitment to fostering expertise across diverse fields.
The decisions were ratified during the 81st Extraordinary Meeting of the Governing Council, which convened on Thursday and Friday. The promotions followed rigorous evaluations, including favourable external assessments of the candidates’ scholarly publications, ensuring that only those with demonstrable contributions to their respective fields were recognized.

The effective dates for these promotions vary, with individuals assuming their new ranks between the years 2020 and 2025, acknowledging the different timelines of their academic progression and assessment.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly promoted academics over the weekend. He characterized these promotions as a direct reflection of the recipients’ unwavering dedication to scholarship, groundbreaking research, and the pursuit of academic excellence.
