Train Fire Erupts on Chattogram-Bound Route, Disrupting Services
A significant fire incident aboard a moving train in the Sitakunda upazila of Chattogram on Thursday morning has resulted in substantial damage to several train coaches. The blaze, which ignited around 7:30 AM near the BMA Gate area in Bhatiari, close to the Bhatiari Railway Station, caused alarm among passengers and led to the temporary suspension of vital rail services.
Witnesses described a scene of panic as flames engulfed parts of the train. Fortunately, the train was reportedly moving at a slow speed at the time of the incident, allowing many passengers to disembark safely before the fire escalated.
Extent of the Damage and Firefighting Efforts
According to Kumira Fire Service Sub-Station Officer Ahsan Ali, the fire completely destroyed at least three coaches. An additional coach sustained partial damage. Firefighters from the Kumira Fire Service Station responded swiftly to the emergency, deploying two units to the scene. Their rapid intervention was crucial in bringing the blaze under control and preventing further spread. The fire has since been fully extinguished.
The origin of the fire has been pinpointed to the train’s power car. From there, the flames rapidly spread to an adjacent air-conditioned coach, exacerbating the situation.
Passenger Accounts and Immediate Aftermath
Passengers on board the Dhaka-bound “Chattala Express,” which had departed Chattogram earlier that morning, experienced a harrowing ordeal. Initial reports indicate that the fire broke out in one of the coaches. The quick thinking of some passengers and the slow speed of the train are credited with preventing any reported casualties. The swift actions of the emergency services ensured that the situation did not escalate into a more tragic event.
Disruption to Rail Operations
The fire incident had a direct impact on rail connectivity, causing a temporary disruption to train services operating between Chattogram and the capital city, Dhaka. Services to and from Sylhet were also affected. This disruption highlighted the critical role of the railway network in connecting major urban centers and the vulnerability of these services to unforeseen events.
The affected section of the track required assessment and clearance before normal operations could resume. Railway authorities worked to mitigate the impact on passenger schedules and cargo transportation as swiftly as possible.
Investigation Launched into the Cause
In response to the incident, Bangladesh Railway has taken a proactive step by forming a dedicated probe committee. This committee has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the precise cause of the fire. Understanding the root cause is paramount to implementing preventative measures and enhancing safety protocols for future train operations. The investigation will likely involve examining the condition of the power car, electrical systems, and maintenance records of the affected train. The findings of this inquiry are expected to provide valuable insights into preventing similar occurrences in the future and ensuring the safety of passengers and railway infrastructure.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of rigorous safety checks and emergency preparedness within the railway system. While the immediate crisis was managed effectively, the long-term implications for service reliability and passenger confidence will be a focus for the railway authorities moving forward.
