Tragic Bus Fire Claims 13 Lives in Andhra Pradesh Following Collision

A devastating road accident in India’s southern state of Andhra Pradesh has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people. The incident occurred when a passenger bus collided with a truck, igniting a massive fire that engulfed both vehicles. The tragedy unfolded in the Markapuram district of the state during the early hours of Thursday.

The ill-fated private passenger bus was en route from Nirmal in Telangana to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh when the collision took place around 6 a.m. local time. Reports indicate that approximately 35 passengers were on board at the time of the incident. The impact of the crash with the tipper truck is believed to have been severe, leading to the rapid spread of flames.

Authorities have confirmed that at least 13 individuals lost their lives in the blaze. Sadly, several passengers are feared to have been burnt alive, according to officials cited by news agency ANI. In addition to the fatalities, at least 20 people sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed his profound shock and grief over the incident. “The tragic loss of 13 passengers, who were burnt alive in a horrific road accident near Rayavaram in Markapuram district, has caused profound shock,” Naidu stated on the social media platform X. He has ordered an immediate investigation into the cause of the accident and requested a comprehensive report. The Chief Minister also conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them of the government’s support.

The Prime Minister’s Office has announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. A compensation of Rs. 200,000 (approximately €1,840) will be provided to the families of each person killed, and Rs. 50,000 (approximately €460) will be given to those injured. “The mishap in Markapuram district, Andhra Pradesh, is tragic. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s office read.

This incident follows a similar, though less severe, event last week in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district, where a private bus caught fire due to a tyre burst. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that instance.

UK Court Rejects Nirav Modi’s Bid to Halt Extradition

In a significant development concerning the extradition of fugitive Indian diamond merchant Nirav Modi, the High Court of Justice in London has refused to reopen his case. This decision moves Modi one step closer to facing charges in India related to an alleged $2 billion (€1.7 billion) bank fraud.

Nirav Modi had petitioned the High Court to review and potentially overturn the extradition order issued by UK courts. His plea was rejected by the High Court of Justice, King’s Bench Division, on Wednesday. Modi had previously argued that he would face a risk of torture if extradited to India.

The Crown Prosecution Service, with the support of a team from India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), including investigating officers who travelled to London for the proceedings, argued the case against Modi’s petition.

In its ruling, the High Court stated that Modi’s petition and the surrounding circumstances did not present exceptional grounds for revisiting the earlier extradition order, according to a statement from the CBI.

Nirav Modi is a key figure in a massive bank fraud case involving the alleged defrauding of the state-owned Punjab National Bank of approximately $2 billion. He left India in early 2018, shortly before the alleged scam came to light. Modi has consistently denied the allegations, asserting that the charges against him are politically motivated. He was arrested in the UK in 2019, and subsequent court proceedings have approved his extradition.

India Grapples with Fuel Crisis and Consumer Protection Concerns

Beyond the immediate tragedies and legal battles, India is also navigating broader economic and consumer-related challenges. The country’s consumer protection watchdog has issued a caution to hotels and restaurants against imposing additional charges for gas and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This advisory comes at a time when India is experiencing a fuel crisis, reportedly exacerbated by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran. The watchdog aims to ensure fair practices for consumers amidst rising energy costs and potential supply disruptions.
