Deadly Village Dispute Erupts Over Paddy Field Trespass
A seemingly minor disagreement over passage through a paddy field has tragically spiraled into a fatal confrontation in the Gunoi village of Baniachong upazila, Habiganj. The escalating conflict resulted in the death of a 65-year-old woman and left at least 15 other villagers injured.
The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday night, began with a dispute between two local residents, Shalik Mia and Nozir Ali. According to local accounts, Shalik Mia traversed Nozir Ali’s paddy field. Nozir Ali reportedly confronted Shalik Mia, alleging damage to his crops. What started as a verbal altercation quickly escalated when Nozir Ali physically pushed Shalik Mia.
This physical confrontation prompted Shalik Mia to rally his supporters. Armed with sticks, they proceeded to Gunoi bazaar with the apparent intention of confronting the opposing faction.
Initial Clash and Intervention
The initial clash reportedly occurred in the vicinity of Gunoi bazaar. Local traders and shoppers present at the market attempted to de-escalate the situation, imploring both groups to cease their disruptive behaviour. Despite these efforts, the conflict later reignited near the Emdadia Madrasa, leading to the injuries of at least 15 individuals.
Police officers from the Baniachong station were dispatched to the scene and were successful in restoring order and bringing the immediate unrest under control.
Fatal Attack After Police Withdrawal
Tragically, the violence did not cease with the police presence. Following the departure of law enforcement, local sources indicate that members of one group allegedly attacked Aklima Bibi, a 65-year-old woman, at her residence. Aklima Bibi, the wife of the late Fozai Mia, sustained critical injuries in the assault. She was subsequently transported to Habiganj Modern Hospital, where she was pronounced dead upon arrival. It is understood that the attack on Aklima Bibi may have been an attempt to falsely implicate the opposing side in the violence.
Official Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation
Kabir Hossain, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Baniachong police station, has confirmed the incident. He stated that the body of Aklima Bibi is currently undergoing a post-mortem examination. As of the latest reports, no formal case has been filed in connection with the fatalities and injuries. However, OC Hossain assured that the situation in the village is now under control. The investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the violent clash and the subsequent fatal attack is ongoing.
The incident highlights the fragility of peace in rural communities and how seemingly minor disputes can have devastating consequences when they escalate without timely and effective intervention. Authorities are working to ensure accountability and prevent further violence in the affected area.
