From Solo Operator to Industry Leader: The Transformative Journey of Okosubide Mozimo

Many of the world’s most transformative leaders began their careers as a one-person operation, a solo force driving a nascent vision. Through unwavering resilience, a pioneering spirit, and a steadfast commitment to integrity, these individuals have meticulously built ventures from humble beginnings into formidable organisations, etching their names into the annals of exceptional leadership. Okosubide Mozimo, the Managing Director of Arco Worldwide Services (AWS), Limited, stands as a compelling testament to this entrepreneurial phenomenon.

AWS, in its formative stages, was the singular domain of Okosubide Mozimo, an engineer by profession. He shouldered every facet of the enterprise, from the grand sweep of strategic planning to the granular details of daily execution. Today, he presides over a dynamic and expansive organisation comprising over 100 dedicated professionals. His journey powerfully illustrates the principle that formidable enterprises can indeed blossom from modest origins, provided a leader possesses a clear vision and the acumen to construct sustainable systems from the ground up.

The Foundation of a Leadership Mindset

Mozimo’s leadership philosophy was not abstractly conceived but rather forged in the crucible of practical, real-world challenges. Early in his career, particularly during his engineering experiences, he internalised a crucial lesson: “plans on paper must survive the friction of the real world.” This pragmatic understanding, coupled with a profound realisation of the critical need for tangible “impact” in Africa – a necessity rather than a mere aspiration – became the twin engines driving his ambition.

Witnessing a significant disparity between available advanced technology and its practical application within the African context, especially concerning drone technology, ignited a passion within Mozimo. This observation propelled him to establish an organisation that would transcend mere service provision, aiming instead to directly address fundamental security and technological challenges prevalent in the region.

An Overview of Arco Worldwide Services (AWS)

Founded in 2016, AWS emerged as a subsidiary of ARCO Group Plc, a well-established Oil and Gas servicing firm boasting over 45 years of industry experience. The core objective of AWS is to deliver bespoke, high-calibre drone surveillance, monitoring, and data services. These offerings are designed to empower critical government agencies and a diverse array of private sector companies across multiple industries, including oil and gas, energy, maritime, military, security, defense, agriculture, infrastructure, and telecommunications.

AWS articulates a clear vision: to ascend to the position of the foremost innovative provider of drone solutions and services globally. Its mission is to facilitate the growth and success of its clients by delivering high-quality and efficient drone technology solutions.

Mozimo further elaborates on AWS’s strategic focus on fostering an ecosystem of development. He highlights their recent venture into Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) training, which led to the establishment of a dedicated training academy. This initiative is specifically designed to facilitate skill transfer and cultivate local expertise. “We ensure that our growth enriches the community,” Mozimo states. “This is the pathway to creating enduring value: by making oneself indispensable to the advancement of the sector.”

The Evolution from Solopreneur to Leader of Over 100 Staff

As previously noted, Mozimo’s tenure at AWS commenced with him as the sole employee. In essence, he embodied the entire organisational structure. “In those nascent days, leadership was synonymous with ‘doing’,” Mozimo recounts. His responsibilities were all-encompassing, encompassing roles such as procurement officer, operations manager, and chief strategist simultaneously.

Mozimo characterises his personal and professional evolution from those initial solitary days to his current leadership position as “profound.” The team gradually expanded to three individuals before blossoming into the robust organisation of over one hundred staff that he now leads.

“As we scaled, my role necessarily transitioned from performing the work to architecting the systems that execute the work,” Mozimo explains. His current focus is centred on formulating high-level strategic initiatives, such as the cultivation of international partnerships. He is also actively guiding the company’s expansion efforts into West Africa and beyond. Mozimo is now supported by a cadre of highly capable leaders whom he has strategically placed to oversee the day-to-day operational execution.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Lessons Learned

Mozimo’s leadership journey at AWS has been marked by a spectrum of significant challenges. One particularly pivotal hurdle involved navigating the intricate and often complex regulatory and logistical frameworks governing aviation and drone technology. He recalls a critical juncture where the imperative was to harmonise international compliance standards with the practical realities on the ground, while simultaneously contributing to the development of a robust industry framework.

“This experience taught me that leadership extends beyond mere vision,” Mozimo reflects. “It demands resilience and a nuanced approach to diplomacy.” The situation also underscored for him the essential role of a leader as a vital conduit, bridging the gap between global best practices and effective local implementation.

The transition from a one-person operation to a fully structured corporate entity presented another substantial challenge for Mozimo. This process involved overcoming numerous obstacles. While recruiting the right talent proved difficult, instilling a sense of ownership and commitment within that talent pool was an equally demanding undertaking. This experience profoundly reinforced the significance of clear communication and well-defined organisational structures. “It compelled me to evolve from being merely a manager to becoming a mentor, ensuring the team grasped not only the ‘what’ of our endeavors but, crucially, the ‘why’,” Mozimo elaborates.

Achievements Symbolising Impact and Excellence

Mozimo has amassed a considerable portfolio of accomplishments. However, he identifies one achievement that most powerfully encapsulates his vision for impact and excellence: securing the accreditation to serve as a reseller for leading global aviation and drone manufacturers across numerous African territories. “This accreditation serves as a powerful validation of our ambition to establish a homegrown African company that operates at the very highest international standards,” he asserts.

His aspiration is to build upon this success, positioning AWS as one of the preeminent drone operators on the African continent. This involves developing a comprehensive value chain that spans drone manufacturing, maintenance, and a wide array of services tailored to diverse sectors. “By undertaking this,” he states, “we will not only drive innovation and create substantial value but also contribute meaningfully to the growth of Africa’s drone ecosystem, all while adhering to stringent international benchmarks.”

Three Guiding Principles for Critical Decisions

Resilience, integrity, and safety constitute the foundational principles that guide Mozimo and the entire AWS team in their decision-making processes. As a Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) company, Mozimo considers resilience to be a non-negotiable imperative. He views integrity as their “currency,” essential for cultivating trust-based relationships with esteemed global partners such as DJI Enterprise and Textron Systems.

“And finally, safety is the bedrock upon which our reputation is built,” Mozimo emphasises. “Any decision that potentially compromises these three core tenets is an immediate ‘no’.”

Cultivating a Culture of Accountability, Innovation, and Adaptability

At AWS, Mozimo has meticulously cultivated a corporate culture characterised by accountability, innovation, and adaptability. He highlights the implementation of clear performance metrics and structured frameworks, such as the Balanced Scorecard, to ensure that every team member possesses a precise understanding of what constitutes success.

He actively fosters innovation by presenting his team with complex problems to solve, rather than assigning a prescriptive list of tasks. For instance, their Research and Development team is routinely tasked with addressing real-world challenges faced by clients. “We empower the team to propose the most effective technological solutions, granting them the autonomy to innovate within our defined strategic parameters,” Mozimo explains.

He firmly believes that adaptability is synonymous with survival, particularly within their dynamic sector where regulatory landscapes and technological advancements are in constant flux. Mozimo points out that a rigid adherence to past practices would mean AWS would still be operating precisely as it did in 2016. “Our commitment to adaptability has enabled us to successfully pivot into high-tech domains such as aviation security and surveillance, thus staying consistently ahead of the curve.”

A Profound Belief in Continuous Learning

Mozimo is a staunch advocate for the transformative power of continuous learning, underscoring its vital role in sustaining mental acuity and fostering professional growth. He describes his pursuit of an MBA at Robert Kennedy College, affiliated with the University of Cumbria in Switzerland, as “immensely rewarding.” The programme is currently providing him with fresh perspectives that he is actively integrating back into the business operations.

Beyond his professional development, Mozimo places significant value on his community engagements. He actively contributes as the Vice President of the Lagos Branch of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) and also serves as the Financial Secretary for the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association, Worldwide. “These roles keep me grounded and meaningfully connected to my community,” he states.

Embracing a ‘Glocal’ Mindset for Global Competitiveness

To effectively compete on the global stage, Mozimo contends that African leaders must embrace a ‘Glocal’ mindset. This involves cultivating the confidence to engage in negotiations with major international corporations, understanding their operational language of compliance and efficiency, and adeptly translating these principles into a compelling value proposition that resonates within Nigeria and across the broader African continent. Mozimo emphatically states that strategy must be global in its standards but inherently local in its application.

Nurturing the Next Generation of Professionals

A defining characteristic of inspirational leadership is an unwavering commitment to preparing and empowering the subsequent generation of professionals. Mozimo embodies this leadership trait through his profound passion for mentorship and training initiatives. His developmental focus extends beyond the internal team at AWS.

He is also actively overseeing the establishment of dedicated training academies for aspiring drone pilots and technicians. Mozimo views this as a direct and vital investment in the future workforce. “We are equipping young professionals with skills that are future-ready and poised to define the next decade of industry advancement in Africa,” he asserts.

Guidance for Emerging Leaders in Africa

Even from his earliest days as a solitary entrepreneur, Mozimo harboured a vision of building a substantial enterprise. Consequently, his primary counsel to emerging African leaders is to “start small but think big.” He urges them not to be discouraged by their modest beginnings and cautions against the pitfalls of complacency.

“Do not underestimate the significance of small beginnings, nor become complacent within them,” he advises. Furthermore, Mozimo encourages emerging leaders to proactively establish their organisational structures and operational processes early on, even before they perceive an immediate necessity for them.

“Finally,” he concludes, “never compromise your core values for the sake of a fleeting victory. Your reputation is, unequivocally, your most invaluable asset.”
