Dankook University Embraces AI Transformation for Future-Ready Education and Research

In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, Dankook University is charting a bold course towards the future by embedding artificial intelligence (AI) at the core of its educational and research endeavors. The institution has launched a comprehensive “AI·X (AI Transformation) Campus” strategy, a multifaceted initiative designed to revolutionize learning, foster groundbreaking research, and equip every student with essential AI competencies. This ambitious plan aims to position Dankook University as a leader in shaping the future of higher education.

The university’s overarching objective is to cultivate a new generation of graduates, referred to as ‘AI-converged talents,’ who possess a deep understanding and practical application of AI across all academic disciplines. This strategic focus on AI integration is intended to bolster the university’s competitiveness in emerging and future industries.

Pioneering AI-Driven Learning Experiences

A cornerstone of Dankook University’s innovative approach to AI education is the “AX-EL (Axel, AI Transformation for Engaging Learning)” model. This advanced system leverages AI to create a more immersive and interactive learning environment, fostering greater student engagement and participation. AX-EL synergizes active learning methodologies with cutting-edge technologies, including the metaverse and extended reality (XR), to cultivate a student-centric pedagogical approach.

Central to the AX-EL model is the development of AI personas. These AI professors are meticulously crafted, drawing upon the extensive knowledge and teaching expertise of human faculty. Far more than static videos or simple chatbots, these AI entities are capable of generating and delivering educational content, articulating complex concepts, and responding to student inquiries with the nuance and responsiveness of a human instructor. Currently, Dankook University has deployed 58 AI-generated introductory videos for various majors, providing invaluable career exploration support for freshmen navigating their academic choices.

Cultivating an AI-Converged Research Ecosystem

To drive innovation in AI research, Dankook University has established the “AI Convergence Research Institute.” This dedicated organization serves as the university’s central hub for advanced research, concentrating on developing core AI technologies and exploring the transformative impact of AI across various industries.

The institute houses a dynamic network of specialized research centers, each focusing on critical AI domains. These include research into mobile AI, autonomous driving and drone technology, AI security, AI applications in energy and the environment, human-centered AI, and metaverse AI. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, Dankook University is significantly enhancing its research prowess, particularly by integrating AI with its established strengths in fields such as semiconductors, future automotive technologies, and digital healthcare.

University-Wide AI Education for All

In response to the accelerating pace of AI development, Dankook University is proactively constructing an AI-based convergence research and education system that extends beyond traditional software-centric programs.

A significant structural reform has seen the reorganization of the College of SW Convergence into the new College of AI Convergence. Furthermore, beginning in the 2026 academic year, the university will introduce a new Department of Artificial Intelligence, admitting an initial cohort of 42 freshmen. At the postgraduate level, Dankook University offers specialized programs including the Department of AI Convergence, the Department of AI Engineering, and a dedicated AI Convergence Education major, thereby establishing a comprehensive AI education framework that spans undergraduate to doctoral studies.

The university’s commitment to AI education is not confined to specialized departments; it is being integrated across the curriculum for all students. The foundational “University SW and AI Introduction” course has been designated as a mandatory liberal arts requirement, underscoring the university’s belief in the universality of AI literacy. To cater to diverse academic backgrounds, the university is developing 19 tailored AI liberal arts courses, with dedicated faculty members spearheading AI instruction within each college. Annually, over 3,000 students are engaged in more than 100 software and AI-related courses.

Further bolstering its AI talent development initiatives, Dankook University has been selected for the prestigious “AI Field Advanced Industry Talent Training Boot Camp Project,” an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Education and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology. Over the next five years, the university will receive approximately 7.1 billion Korean won in funding to cultivate 750 highly skilled professionals in the fields of AI Transformation (AX) and next-generation AI technologies.

The university’s curriculum development will place a strong emphasis on cutting-edge AI technologies, including physical AI, human-centered AI, agentic AI, and sovereign AI. To ensure practical application and career readiness, Dankook University is actively building a robust industry-academia collaboration model. This partnership extends from curriculum design to direct employment pathways, with collaborations already established with 15 leading companies, including Naver Cloud, DataStreams, and Dacon.

Dankook University President Ahn Soon-cheol articulated the institution’s strategic vision, stating, “We are making AI-based convergence education and research a core university strategy.” He further emphasized the university’s ambition to “develop Dankook University into an AI·X innovation hub, establish an employment virtuous cycle based on industry-academia collaboration, and contribute to strengthening the national competitiveness of advanced strategic industries.”
