The Rise of the Crossover: Renault Korea’s Filante Aims to Redefine Driving Dynamics

For close to a decade, the automotive landscape, particularly in domestic markets, has been overwhelmingly dominated by sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Their inherent advantage of a higher seating position offered drivers a commanding view of the road and a sense of spaciousness, qualities that resonated strongly with consumers prioritizing practicality. However, as the SUV segment matured and these vehicles became ubiquitous, certain limitations began to surface. A growing chorus of complaints highlighted a disconnect between perceived space and actual ride comfort, with many drivers finding long journeys fatiguing. Furthermore, some consumers noted that the driving dynamics of SUVs often fell short when compared to traditional sedans, a significant drawback for those seeking a more engaging driving experience.

This evolving consumer sentiment has created a distinct market niche, and Renault Korea’s Filante, launched earlier this year, is strategically positioned to capture it. The Filante is conceptualized as a crossover, a vehicle that artfully blends the attributes of both sedans and SUVs. Its name, “Filante,” is derived from the French term for “shooting star” (étoile filante), a nod to Renault’s historical pioneering spirit. The model draws inspiration from the experimental “Étoile Filante” unveiled by French Renault in 1956, a vehicle famously powered by an aircraft engine. Building on the success of last year’s Grand KLEOS, the Filante represents Renault Korea’s latest endeavor to make a significant impact on the Korean automotive market.

Design Philosophy: Balancing Form and Function

The Filante measures an impressive 4,915 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, and 1,635 mm in height, placing its dimensions in a similar category to vehicles like the Genesis GV70. While it shares its underlying platform with the Grand KLEOS, the Filante boasts a body that is one class larger yet noticeably lower in profile. Traditional SUVs often feature higher rooflines to maximize interior volume for passengers and cargo. However, this elevated design inherently raises a vehicle’s center of gravity, which can exacerbate body roll during cornering or when exposed to strong crosswinds.

In contrast, the Filante’s design prioritizes a lower, more elongated silhouette. This strategic choice significantly lowers its center of gravity, contributing to a more stable and planted feel on the road. The vehicle’s track width—the distance between the left and right wheels—has also been widened, further enhancing its stability, particularly when navigating turns. While its exterior presents a crossover aesthetic, its core driving dynamics are engineered to emulate the refined feel of a sedan.

Advanced Suspension for Superior Comfort

This deliberate design philosophy extends to the Filante’s sophisticated suspension system. A key component is the innovative “frequency-sensitive damper (SFD).” Dampers are crucial for absorbing and mitigating the impact of road imperfections, preventing them from being transmitted to the vehicle’s chassis. A common challenge in suspension tuning is the trade-off between firmness for handling and softness for ride comfort. Stiff settings can lead to a harsh ride, while overly soft settings can result in excessive body movement and a lack of control.

Renault’s SFD system addresses this challenge by dynamically adjusting the damper stiffness in real time, responding to variations in vehicle speed and prevailing road conditions. At lower speeds, the dampers firm up to provide enhanced stability and responsiveness during cornering. Conversely, at higher speeds, the system softens to absorb road imperfections more effectively, thereby reducing driver and passenger fatigue on extended journeys.

Complementing the SFD, the rear wheels are equipped with a “multi-link suspension.” This advanced setup allows each wheel to independently manage and absorb road shocks. This independent articulation prevents disturbances from one wheel from negatively impacting the other, ensuring a smoother and more consistent ride across varied surfaces. Collectively, these advanced suspension technologies enable the Filante to deliver a level of ride comfort typically associated with premium sedans.

E-Tech Full Hybrid Powertrain: Efficiency and Serenity

Under the hood, the Filante is powered by Renault’s acclaimed “E-Tech Full Hybrid” system. This sophisticated powertrain seamlessly integrates a gasoline engine with an electric motor. The electric motor takes the lead during initial acceleration, providing an immediate and responsive surge of power the moment the accelerator pedal is engaged. The transition to the gasoline engine is remarkably smooth, with minimal perceptible shift shock.

The system delivers a commendable combined fuel efficiency of 17.5 kilometers per liter, positioning it as a highly efficient option within the compact SUV segment. The substantial contribution of the electric motor also ensures a remarkably quiet driving experience. During urban driving at lower speeds, the gasoline engine frequently disengages, allowing the electric motor to propel the vehicle silently.

This serene cabin environment is further enhanced by the inclusion of “active noise cancellation (ANC).” This technology employs strategically placed microphones to detect unwanted engine and tire noise. It then generates counteracting sound waves emitted through the vehicle’s speakers, effectively neutralizing these intrusive sounds. For an additional layer of acoustic insulation, the windshield and front-side windows feature dual-layer laminated glass. This combination of active and passive noise reduction measures significantly minimizes auditory fatigue, making long highway drives a more tranquil experience for all occupants.
