Dhaka Ranks 22nd in Global Air Pollution List
Dhaka, on Wednesday morning, ranked 22nd among the world’s most polluted cities. Despite the presence of rainfall, the city recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) score of 77 at 9:15 am. According to the AQI scale, the air quality in Dhaka was classified as ‘Moderate’. This classification means that the air is generally acceptable for most people, although a very small number of individuals who are unusually sensitive may experience moderate health concerns.
Kinshasa topped the global pollution list with an AQI score of 188, followed closely by Kuwait City with 156 and Dubai with 134. These figures highlight the severity of air pollution in these regions, which can have significant health implications for residents.
The AQI system provides a clear indication of air quality levels. A reading between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, while a range of 151 to 200 is labeled ‘unhealthy’. The scale further categorizes readings between 201 and 300 as ‘very unhealthy’, and anything above 301 is deemed ‘hazardous’, posing serious health risks.
The AQI serves as a daily tool to monitor and assess air quality. It helps individuals understand how clean or polluted the air is and identifies potential health impacts associated with different levels of pollution. This information is crucial for making informed decisions about outdoor activities and health precautions.
In Bangladesh, the AQI is calculated based on five major pollutants: particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone. These pollutants contribute significantly to air quality issues, particularly in urban areas like Dhaka.
Dhaka has long struggled with air pollution, with the situation typically worsening during the winter months and improving slightly during the monsoon season. This cyclical pattern underscores the need for sustained efforts to address pollution sources and implement effective mitigation strategies.
The World Health Organization estimates that air pollution causes around seven million deaths globally each year. These fatalities are primarily attributed to conditions such as stroke, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer, and acute respiratory infections. The impact of air pollution extends beyond immediate health effects, influencing economic productivity and overall quality of life.
