New Benefits for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Members
Pakistan has recently unveiled details of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Members (Salaries, Allowances and Privileges) Amendment Act 2026. This legislation, which was approved three months ago, has now been made public, revealing a range of new benefits for provincial lawmakers.
One of the most notable provisions in the amendment is the exemption of all members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from toll taxes across the province. This means that assembly members will no longer have to pay toll fees when traveling within the region, providing them with financial relief during their official duties.
In addition to this, the bill recommends that the federal government issue lifetime official blue passports to provincial lawmakers and their spouses. These blue passports are typically reserved for high-ranking officials and offer a level of convenience and recognition that extends beyond regular travel documents.
Another significant change involves the number of non-prohibited bore firearm licenses available to each assembly member. The amendment increases this number to eight, allowing lawmakers more flexibility in handling security-related matters.
The legislation also introduces provisions for free accommodation at government rest houses. Lawmakers can stay at circuit houses, rest houses, or other government-owned accommodations for up to three days during official visits. This provision aims to reduce the cost of travel and lodging for assembly members while they perform their duties.
Security and Attendance Provisions
The amendment also addresses security and attendance requirements for assembly members. It states that the provincial Home Department will determine whether an assembly member is entitled to Category A or Category B security. This classification is based on the perceived threat level and the nature of the member’s work.
In terms of attendance, the law specifies that lawmakers who miss more than one-fourth of the assembly sessions in a month may face salary suspension. This measure is intended to ensure that assembly members remain actively involved in legislative processes and fulfill their responsibilities.
Additionally, the law includes a provision that allows for the withholding of salaries for any assembly member convicted of a criminal offense. This ensures that legal accountability is maintained and that those found guilty of wrongdoing do not continue to receive public funds.
