Family’s Joyful Journey to Wedding Turns to Tragedy in Virginia Pile-Up
A planned celebration of love has been overshadowed by unimaginable grief following a devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 in Virginia. A Massachusetts family of four, en route to a wedding in South Carolina with a car full of homemade desserts, tragically lost their lives in the horrific crash.
Dmitri Doncev, 45, his wife Ecaterina Doncev, 44, and their children Emily and Mark were killed in the early hours of Friday morning in Stafford County. Authorities have indicated that a motorcoach, travelling at a high rate of speed, initiated a chain-reaction collision with vehicles that had reportedly slowed down due to a work zone. The horrific incident unfolded around 2:35 a.m.
The family’s destination was a wedding scheduled for Sunday. While the ceremony will proceed, it will now be a profoundly somber occasion, a testament to the devastating loss the family and their loved ones are experiencing.
Carolina Bublik, a relative, spoke of the family’s profound sorrow. “A son, a father — the whole family — everyone that has been dear to us,” she expressed, her voice heavy with emotion.
The Devastating Chain of Events
According to Virginia State Police, the motorcoach first struck a Chevrolet Suburban. This impact then propelled the Suburban into the Acura sedan carrying the Doncev family. Tragically, Priscilla Mafalda, 25, of Worcester, Massachusetts, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet SUV, also perished in the crash.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with numerous individuals receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the pile-up. While most were discharged after assessment, Mary Washington Healthcare confirmed that at least one person remained in critical condition.
Investigation Underway, Charges Laid
The driver of the motorcoach, identified as Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. Virginia State Police have indicated that further charges are anticipated. It remains unclear at this time whether Dong is in custody or has secured legal representation.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a comprehensive, months-long investigation into the incident, which will run parallel to the state police’s inquiry. NTSB board member Tom Chapman provided some initial details, noting that the bus was travelling at a significant speed.
“It seems fairly clear that if there was any braking there wasn’t much, because of the speed and severity of the collision,” Chapman stated, highlighting the force of the impact.
The motorcoach, operated by E&P Travel Inc. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, was reportedly transporting passengers from New York to North Carolina.
Questions Surrounding Language Proficiency
As part of its investigation, the NTSB will also examine the driver’s language proficiency. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, citing police reports, shared via social media that Dong, who is a native of China, does not speak English. This aspect of the investigation raises important questions regarding communication protocols and safety measures for drivers operating in English-speaking regions.
A Life Dedicated to Service and Family
Dmitri Doncev was a respected nurse at Holyoke Medical Center, a profession that underscored his dedication to caring for others. Ecaterina Doncev, a talented hairstylist, had spent days meticulously preparing homemade desserts for the upcoming family wedding, a labour of love that tragically ended before it could be shared.
The couple had emigrated to the United States from Moldova in 2008, eventually settling in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Their journey to America was one of hope and a desire for a better future for their family.
Dmitri and his brother, Iuri, had been travelling separately to South Carolina for the wedding. “At some point they ended up getting separated,” Bublik recounted. “Dmitri said, ‘You go ahead. I’ll catch up later.’ It was a big shock when Iuri arrived at the house. Dmitri should have arrived around the same time. When his car did not show up, and he wasn’t picking up the phone — that’s when the family started panicking.” This detail adds another layer of heartbreak to the already devastating narrative.
The loss of the Doncev family serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the devastating consequences that can arise from a single moment of negligence on our roadways.
