From Pampered Pet to Pawsitively Broke: The Sad Saga of Karl Lagerfeld’s Feline Heiress
Once lauded as the world’s wealthiest cat, Choupette Lagerfeld, the beloved Birman of the late fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, has reportedly found herself in a rather precarious financial situation. For years, Choupette lived a life of unparalleled luxury, a far cry from the ordinary feline existence. Her days were filled with the opulence of private jets, a dedicated personal chef, and dining from designer bowls. Now, however, the pampered moggy is said to be “broke,” relying on the generosity of Lagerfeld’s former housekeeper for her upkeep.
Francoise Cacote, who served as Lagerfeld’s loyal French housemaid, revealed the stark reality of Choupette’s current circumstances. “We have received absolutely nothing,” Ms Cacote stated, expressing her surprise and disappointment. “I work part-time to support her,” she added, highlighting the financial strain of caring for the once-celebrated cat.
Karl Lagerfeld, the visionary creative director behind Chanel for decades, had a deep and public affection for Choupette. He made it unequivocally clear that he wished for her to be well cared for following his passing in 2019. Ms Cacote is striving to honour these wishes, stating, “I’m doing my best to honour his.”
At the height of her pampered existence, Choupette resided with Lagerfeld in his opulent £10 million Parisian residence, situated alongside the picturesque River Seine. Her meals were served in bespoke Maison Goyard bowls, a testament to the extraordinary lifestyle afforded to her. Today, Choupette shares her living space with Ms Cacote, her husband, their children, and a rescue cat, a far more humble arrangement than her former grandeur.
This dramatic shift in fortune marks a significant fall from grace for the feline Lagerfeld adored. The fashion mogul himself famously declared, “I’m doing my best to honour his wishes,” referring to his profound bond with his pet. He even went so far as to say, “I have only one great love: my cat, Choupette. She is the centre of the world.”
Choupette wasn’t just a cherished companion; she was also a lucrative asset. She ascended to become one of the world’s most successful feline models, reportedly raking in a staggering $3 million in 2014 alone from various advertising campaigns. Her photogenic charm and Lagerfeld’s immense influence undoubtedly contributed to her commercial success. However, with Lagerfeld no longer at the helm to orchestrate and direct these lucrative campaigns, Choupette’s modelling career has naturally seen a significant slowdown.
Adding another layer of complexity to Choupette’s situation, Lagerfeld’s will is reportedly facing a legal challenge. Claims have been made that the fashion titan was not of sound mind when he bequeathed his estimated $150 million estate. This legal battle is further complicated by French law, which explicitly prohibits animals from inheriting money or property directly.
“I have had to hire expensive lawyers to claim the inheritance in my name,” Ms Cacote admitted, underscoring the intricate legal and financial hurdles involved in attempting to secure any funds designated for Choupette’s care.
The story of Choupette serves as a poignant reminder of the ephemeral nature of wealth and the complexities that can arise when immense fortunes are involved, even when they are intended for a beloved pet. While the legal battles unfold, the focus for many remains on the welfare of this once-privileged feline, who now navigates a reality far removed from the gilded cage she once inhabited. The future remains uncertain for the cat who captured the heart of a fashion legend, and whose inheritance is now caught in a legal tug-of-war.
