Warzone’s Last Stand on Old Consoles as Modern Warfare 4 Looms
Activision is gradually winding down support for its massively popular battle royale, Call of Duty: Warzone, on last-generation consoles, specifically the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This strategic shift is paving the way for the highly anticipated arrival of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
The publisher has detailed the phased reduction of services for Warzone on these older platforms. As of June 4th, the game will no longer be available for new downloads from the respective digital storefronts. This means that any players who haven’t already installed Warzone on their PS4 or Xbox One will miss out on experiencing the game on these consoles.
Further impacting the player experience, the in-game store for Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will be removed on June 25th. However, existing players will still be able to access and progress through the Battle Pass, allowing them to unlock free tiers by earning experience and levelling up.
Season 6 is officially slated to be the final season for Call of Duty: Warzone players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. While support for the game on these consoles will cease later this year, players will still be able to redeem any unspent COD Points within Warzone on their existing PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Crucially, these COD Points are account-bound, not tied to specific hardware. This means that any remaining points will be accessible on newer, supported platforms if players choose to upgrade.
It’s important to note that this sunsetting of Warzone support does not affect other Call of Duty titles. Players will continue to be able to enjoy a wide range of previous Call of Duty games on their PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
Infinity Ward Unveils Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
In tandem with these Warzone developments, Infinity Ward, a key studio under the Activision umbrella, has officially announced the next major entry in the Call of Duty franchise: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. This new title is scheduled for release on October 23rd, 2026.
Modern Warfare 4 is slated to launch across a range of current-generation and upcoming platforms, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. This marks a significant step for the franchise, as Modern Warfare 4 will be the first Call of Duty title in the series to not offer support for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.
