Tasmania’s Rising Talent in the 2026 AFL Draft

Tasmania has produced a number of standout prospects for the 2026 AFL Draft, with one player in particular making waves as a top contender. Hugh McCallum, the winger for the Tasmania Devils, has emerged as one of the state’s most promising talents. His performance in the Talent League has been exceptional, showcasing his ability to find the ball and fulfill his role effectively.

McCallum’s consistent production has set him apart from other top-aged players in Tasmania. His running capacity and ability to cover ground have been key factors in his success. According to Tassie Under-18s coach Scott Moore, McCallum has shown remarkable growth over the season.

“He’s gone from strength to strength, built off the back of his running capacity and ability to cover the ground is clearly his strength,” Moore said. “He’s got a great understanding and willingness to learn what’s required for that wing role and has the flexibility to play from half-back to half forward as well.”

McCallum’s versatility allows him to contribute both offensively and defensively. He can sneak forward to add to the scoreboard while also providing support on the defensive end. Moore highlighted the player’s intelligence and adaptability.

“He can sneak forward and hit the scoreboard and slides support defensively. He’s going well. We’re hopeful he can get an Allies opportunity and showcase his skills on the highest stage. He’s clean and got a nice kick so he’s growing. The growth in his positioning, holding shape have continued to grow. His IQ and willingness to apply his learnings in game are really key. There has been great growth in his running patterns, positioning and willingness to move the ball forward.”

Other Notable Prospects

In addition to McCallum, the Devils have two other prospects linked with North Melbourne: Jess Bula and Archie Devine. Both players have shown promise and are being closely watched by recruiters.

Jess Bula, who is currently sidelined due to a fractured and dislocated finger, has made a strong start to the season. His aggressive contest play in the first fortnight was impressive, and he is expected to return before the end of the month. Moore praised Bula’s power and explosiveness.

“He’s got power, he’s got explosiveness which is fantastic. He can break the game open and burst out,” Moore said. “It’s eye-catching. For Jess, it’s about consistency and doing it more often.”

Archie Devine, another key player, is a natural ball-winner who has become more effective with the ball in hand this season. While he has been given midfield opportunities, he is expected to begin his senior career in a half-back role. Devine has also trained at Arden St with the Roos.

“He’s got an ability to accumulate the ball. He gets to positions where he’s able to receive,” Moore said. “The growth in his game is finding a balance between accumulating and damaging. In the last couple of weeks he’s been more damaging moving the ball forward. He can break the game open with kicking and handballing forward. He’s relatively new to the midfield spot and is in there because of his ability to cover the ground and engage.”

Charlie Bovill: A Versatile Defender

Charlie Bovill is another Tasmanian prospect who has caught the attention of recruiters. His size makes him an appealing option for teams looking for a tall defender. Bovill primarily plays as a key defender but has also seen time on the wing and forward during the early part of the season.

“Charlie has played the vast majority (of his footy) as a defender, a third tall type who is able to roll off and provide rebound,” Moore noted. “We’ve also given him stints on the wing in recent weeks which allows an athlete of his size to showcase his running capacity.”

Bovill’s physicality and endurance make him a valuable asset on the field. His ability to run up and down the ground gives him an edge in both attack and defense. Moore also highlighted his potential as a marking target for exit kicks.

“He has quite a good tank which allows him to get up and down the ground. He can be a marking target for exit kicks.”
