Reopening of a Cold Case
A long-standing cold case involving an armed robbery that occurred over three decades ago in a Melbourne shopping centre has been reopened by police, with a renewed appeal for public assistance. The incident, which left three men injured by gunshots, is now under fresh scrutiny as investigators seek to uncover new leads and bring the perpetrator to justice.
The attack took place on a Monday morning at Chadstone Shopping Centre in May 1994. Two Armaguard security officers and a bystander were injured when a man allegedly used a handgun to shoot at them and fled with bags of cash. At the time, the officers were collecting the weekend’s takings from the cinema within the complex.
Victoria Police have stated that “new intelligence” has prompted the re-examination of this case. Crime scene exhibits that had been stored for years are now being reviewed, and forensic testing is being conducted to uncover any previously overlooked evidence.
Armed Crime Squad Investigates
Armed Crime Squad Detective Inspector Adam Tilley emphasized the severity of the crime and the need for public help. He said that the nature of the offense suggests it was unlikely to be the first or last such robbery committed by the offender.
“We believe there will be someone out there who has information on this incident and who was involved,” he said. “Suddenly coming into that amount of cash isn’t easy to explain.”
Tilley also noted that the amount of cash taken was substantial. “For someone to return home with a large quantity of cash would be hard to explain,” he added.
The Good Samaritan Among the Injured
Among the three individuals injured during the robbery was a 40-year-old Doveton man, who acted as a good Samaritan by following the armed offender. He was shot in his left leg during the incident. The two Armaguard officers involved were a 61-year-old North Melbourne man and a 54-year-old Sandringham man.
The suspect, described as being between 30 and 40 years old and 170-178cm tall, was wearing a fawn long-sleeved top, a fawn balaclava, and brown gloves. During the robbery, the suspect was also believed to have pointed his gun at other civilians.
Family’s Plea for Justice
Karl, the son of one of the injured Armaguard workers, shared his family’s experience with the incident. He mentioned that after his father’s death, his mother discovered a folder containing news clippings about the event. This discovery highlighted the lasting impact of the trauma on his father.
Karl urged anyone with information to come forward, stating that justice for his father and other victims was still possible. “It’s not too late for my mum to see justice for what was done to her husband,” he said. “It’s not too late for the other family members who remember what happened to their loved ones.”
