Potential Queensland Maroons Debut for Briton Nikora

Briton Nikora, a second-rower for the Cronulla Sharks, is reportedly under consideration for a Queensland Maroons debut in Game 1 of the 2026 State of Origin series. This potential move comes as a result of recent eligibility changes made by the NRL and Australian Rugby League Commission, which have opened the door for players who previously represented other Tier 1 nations to now be eligible for Origin selection.

Nikora, who has represented New Zealand internationally, now meets the new criteria that allows him to switch allegiance to Queensland. Previously, players who had played for Tier 1 nations such as England and New Zealand were ineligible for Origin, while those from Tier 2 nations like Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea were still considered eligible. However, the rule requiring players to be playing rugby league in the state of eligibility by the time they turn 13, or to have been born in either New South Wales or Queensland, remains unchanged.

Given that Nikora fits these criteria, his name was quickly mentioned as a possible candidate for the Queensland squad following the announcement of the new eligibility rules. Despite a mixed form this season, which seems to mirror the overall performance of the Sharks, reports suggest that he is still being considered for selection.

Impact of Injury on Queensland’s Squad Selection

Queensland is currently without key player Jeremiah Nanai, who has been ruled out of the start of the 2026 series due to injury. This absence has led to speculation about the players who might fill the second-row position. Potential candidates include Kurt Capewell, Reuben Cotter, Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, and Heilum Luki. However, it is now anticipated that Nikora could be included in Billy Slater’s 19-man squad for Game 1.

Nikora, who is 28 years old, has earned 16 caps for the New Zealand national team and has consistently been one of the Sharks’ most reliable performers. His experience and skill set make him a strong contender for the Queensland squad, despite the uncertainty surrounding his form this season.

What to Expect from the Squad Announcement

Billy Slater is expected to announce his 19-man squad for Game 1 of the 2026 State of Origin series on Monday morning. The selection process will likely involve careful consideration of both current form and long-term potential, with Nikora’s inclusion seen as a strategic move to bolster the second-row options available to the Maroons.

As the competition approaches, all eyes will be on the final squad list and how it shapes up for the upcoming series. With the potential addition of Nikora, the Queensland Maroons are looking to build a strong and competitive team for the 2026 campaign.
