A Journey of Rivalry and Reconciliation
Former governor of Ogun State and senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, shared a story of political rivalry that once defined his relationship with his successor in office, Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He described the experience as going through “hell” under what he called his “enfant terrible successor.” This account came during his 70th birthday thanksgiving service held at Abraham’s Tabernacle in Sagamu, where he reflected on past challenges and current unity.
Daniel highlighted that the core of their political differences stemmed from Amosun’s eagerness to become governor. According to Daniel, there was nothing anyone, including himself, could do to stop Amosun’s ambitions. The former governor admitted that because he had not publicly supported Amosun’s governorship aspirations, the latter wasted no time in targeting him after taking office in May 2011.
Despite these challenges, Daniel emphasized that the two have since reconciled, putting past political conflicts aside. They now focus on contributing to the development of Ogun State and the country as a whole.
A Celebratory Gathering
The thanksgiving ceremony attracted a wide array of notable figures, including the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye; former President Olusegun Obasanjo, represented by his wife, Mrs. Bola Obasanjo; Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by the Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele; Osun State Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi; former Governor Amosun; Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; Alake and paramount ruler of Egba land, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo; the Akarigbo and paramount ruler of Remo land, Oba Babatunde Ajayi; Senator Iyabo Obasanjo; and 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Oladipupo Adebutu, among others.
During the event, Daniel expressed gratitude for the presence of former governors, particularly highlighting Senator Ibikunle Amosun. He acknowledged the difficult times they faced but also praised Amosun for his repentance and the prayers of clergymen that helped heal their relationship.
Political History and Reconciliation
Daniel and Amosun were initially political allies. During the senator’s first term as governor from 2003 to 2007, Amosun, elected on the same platform of the PDP, represented Ogun Central in the Senate. However, Daniel’s aspirations for a second term reportedly led to a rift between them before the 2007 governorship election.
Amosun eventually left the PDP and contested against Daniel on the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party but lost the election. Later, Amosun succeeded Daniel after winning the 2011 election, defeating Gboyega Isiaka of the Peoples Party of Nigeria, who was backed by Daniel.
Upon assuming office in May 2011, Amosun launched an investigation into Daniel’s administration, leading to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charging him with financial embezzlement worth N7 billion. After years of legal proceedings, the court case was dismissed, and Daniel was acquitted of all charges.
A Message of Hope and Unity
Daniel expressed happiness at the large turnout for the ceremony, emphasizing that the people came out in large numbers to honor his leadership over the past 25 years. He also voiced confidence in the future of the country, urging continued support for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, which he believes is committed to restoring national greatness.
Pastor Adeboye, ministering at the special birthday service, described Daniel as an “exceptional politician and original Omoluwabi.” He noted that Daniel has never used politics to undermine the church, making him a rare figure in the region.
Adeboye urged attendees to be conscious of their life’s journey, emphasizing the importance of fearing God, prioritizing holiness, and accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior. His message resonated deeply with the congregation, reinforcing the spiritual significance of the occasion.
Recognition and Appreciation
Governor Abiodun praised Daniel’s contributions to governance and national development. He highlighted that as governor of Ogun State, Daniel brought energy and purpose to governance, laying foundations for continued growth and development. Abiodun also commended Daniel’s ongoing work as a senator, noting his meaningful contributions to legislation and representation.
Congratulating Daniel on reaching the milestone of 70 years, Abiodun prayed that he would continue to grow stronger and dedicate the rest of his life to serving humanity.
