Football, a sport often defined by its fleeting memories, has once again showcased its unpredictable nature. Mere weeks ago, supporters of the Harare giants, Dynamos, found themselves grappling with the bitter taste of a devastating 5-0 defeat against Scottland in the opening fixture of the Castle Lager Challenge Cup. The air was thick with criticism, and many pundits foresaw another bleak season for the club, which narrowly avoided relegation on the final day of the previous campaign.
However, the narrative has dramatically shifted. Today, the “Glamour Boys,” as they are affectionately known, are once again embodying their moniker with pride. Their current standing is a testament to a remarkable turnaround, with the team remaining undefeated in the league and occupying a commendable second position on the standings, accumulating seven points. This impressive resurgence is the work of Genesis Mangombe’s revitalised Dynamos squad, achieving a feat few had anticipated.
A Statement of Intent on the Road
The team’s latest assertion of their renewed ambition came on Thursday with a hard-fought 2-0 away victory against Bulawayo Chiefs, a team that has historically proven to be a troublesome opponent for Dynamos, at the Barbourfields Stadium. The deadlock was broken by Jairos Kasondo, who demonstrated sharp predatory instincts with a well-placed strike from close range. The lead was then cemented by a clinical header from Frank Agyemang, securing the crucial three points for his side.
The margin of victory could have been more emphatic. A powerful long-range effort from Shadreck Nyahwa appeared to have crossed the goal line after a momentary lapse from the Chiefs’ goalkeeper. However, in a decision that left many bewildered, officials waved play on, denying what many believed would have been a strong contender for the Goal of the Season award.
This crucial away win, following a previous 2-1 victory over TelOne and an exciting 2-2 draw against rivals Highlanders, has propelled Dynamos to second place in the league table. They now sit just two points adrift of their fiercest rivals, Caps United, setting the stage for an intriguing title race.
Mangombe’s Measured Optimism
Despite the undeniable upward trajectory of his team, manager Genesis Mangombe remains grounded, urging caution against premature celebrations. He acknowledges that the team is still in a developmental phase, stating, “We are still trying some few combinations. We don’t have a proper team at the moment. We are still working on some combinations. Very soon, we will have something that I can call a team. But I’m happy we can grind results along the way.”
Mangombe’s strategic acumen has been a defining characteristic of Dynamos’ early season performances. His tactical flexibility was evident in the recent match against Bulawayo Chiefs. Both Jairos Kasondo and Frank Agyemang, who had started against Highlanders, were introduced as substitutes on Thursday. This calculated gamble proved to be a masterstroke, with both players going on to score.
“I’m happy that Frank and Kasondo did very well when they came on and they managed to score,” Mangombe remarked. “That is exactly what we expect from everyone who is on the team. Everyone must add value. I have told them, ‘If you are on the bench, you have to come in and change the game.’ I’m happy they did that, and it also boosts their confidence.”
Building on Defensive Solidity
Beyond the offensive prowess, Mangombe expressed significant satisfaction with his team’s ability to maintain a clean sheet at Barbourfields. This defensive resilience was a marked improvement from their previous outings. “I’m very happy that we didn’t concede,” he added. “For the past two matches, we were conceding goals. This can be a good foundation which we can build on.”
The challenges, however, are far from over. The team faces a demanding schedule, with an immediate fixture against promoted side Agama at Wadzanayi this afternoon. While Agama has endured a difficult start to the season, losing all three of their opening matches, Mangombe is acutely aware of the potential pitfalls associated with quick turnarounds and the physical demands of travel.
“I’m anticipating another very difficult game,” he warned. “We only have a day to train for the game so we will try and manage the load for travelling. We need to do proper recoveries for the players so that they have the proper energies.”
