Gout Gout Eyes Revenge Against Kennedy in Highly Anticipated Melbourne 200m Showdown
The Australian athletics scene is buzzing with anticipation as sprint sensation Gout Gout has declared his intention to seek revenge against rival Lachlan Kennedy in a thrilling 200-metre duel at the upcoming Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne on March 28. This highly anticipated clash promises to reignite the fiery competition that captivated spectators last year.
The pair’s previous encounter at Melbourne’s Lakeside Stadium saw Kennedy snatch a surprising victory over Gout, a result that has clearly fuelled Gout’s determination for this year’s event. “It was a great meet last year and an awesome vibe down on the track,” Gout commented, reflecting on the electrifying atmosphere. “I know it’s going to be the same again this year. Lachie ran great last year, so for sure I’m out for revenge.”
Gout, an 18-year-old prodigy, already holds the coveted Australian 200-metre record, a blistering 20.02 seconds he set in the Czech Republic in June of last year. This remarkable performance further cemented his dominance in his signature event, having lowered his own benchmark multiple times since he shattered Peter Norman’s long-standing national record of 20.06 seconds in late 2024. Norman’s record had stood as the national benchmark for an impressive 56 years, highlighting the magnitude of Gout’s achievements.

Meanwhile, Lachlan Kennedy, a formidable competitor in his own right, has also been in fine form. The world indoor silver medallist over 60 metres, Kennedy kicked off his season with a strong performance, clocking a season-opening time of 20.46 seconds to claim victory at the Hobart Track Classic last weekend. This was his first race since July, demonstrating his immediate readiness to compete at the highest level. Kennedy’s personal best stands at 20.26 seconds, a time he recorded when he narrowly edged out Gout in their last Melbourne encounter.
The upcoming Maurie Plant Meet, however, is set to feature more than just the two Australian stars. Adding an international flavour to the already compelling 200-metre race will be Irish-born sprinter Benjamin Richardson. While born in Dublin, Richardson was raised in South Africa and boasts an impressive personal best of 19.99 seconds over the 200-metre distance, making him a serious contender and a significant threat to both Gout and Kennedy.

In other major athletics news, American sprinting sensation Sha’Carri Richardson has been confirmed to compete at the prestigious Stawell Gift in early April. The undisputed megastar of the 100-metre sprint will headline the event, joined by her compatriot and former 100-metre world champion, Christian Coleman. Sha’Carri Richardson is a reigning 100-metre world champion and an Olympic silver medallist in the event from the 2024 Paris Games, where she also secured a gold medal as part of the United States’ dominant 4×100-metre relay team.
Interestingly, while Gout and Kennedy were among the main attractions at the Stawell Gift last year, they are not expected to participate in this year’s event, which is scheduled to take place from April 4-6 in the picturesque Wimmera region of Victoria. Their focus appears to be squarely on their direct rivalry on the track in Melbourne, setting the stage for an unforgettable showdown.
The Maurie Plant Meet is shaping up to be a must-watch event for athletics fans, with the Gout vs. Kennedy 200-metre race promising intense rivalry and exceptional speed. The addition of Benjamin Richardson only intensifies the competition, ensuring a truly world-class display of sprinting talent. As Gout aims to reclaim his dominance and settle the score with Kennedy, the Melbourne track is set to witness another chapter in this burgeoning Australian sprinting saga.
