Man Shot by Police Following Armed Confrontation on Sunshine Coast
A tense situation unfolded on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast this afternoon when police shot a man allegedly armed with a firearm following a single-vehicle crash and subsequent pursuit. The incident, which occurred just before midday, saw officers respond to a crash on the Sunshine Motorway on-ramp at Sippy Downs.
Following the initial crash, the man reportedly fled the scene. Police then tracked the vehicle to Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, approximately 10 kilometres north of the original incident. According to a spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service, the driver exited his vehicle and approached officers while allegedly in possession of a gun. It was at this point that police discharged their firearms, striking the man.
Emergency services were quick to respond. Officers provided immediate first aid at the scene before paramedics transported the injured man to Sunshine Coast University Hospital. A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the man sustained a “serious wound” but was in a stable condition.
Detective Acting Inspector Kerri Della-Bedova later provided further details, identifying the injured individual as a 31-year-old man who sustained an injury to his shoulder. She indicated that the investigation is ongoing and that the man had received a lift from another individual after the initial crash, which is considered a significant aspect of the inquiry. At this stage, it remains unclear whether the 31-year-old was a person of interest to police prior to the shooting incident.
Witness Accounts Paint a Vivid Picture
The dramatic events did not go unnoticed by local residents. Claire Smith, who was driving past the scene, described the experience as “scary.” She witnessed a portion of the confrontation, observing the man interacting with at least four police officers who had their firearms drawn.
“It just looked like he was taunting the police, I couldn’t hear what he was saying,” Ms Smith recounted. “I was afraid for the [drivers] that had stopped because they were right next to him.” She distinctly recalls hearing two gunshots ring out as she passed. “It was so out of place to see a man waving a firearm around with the police with their guns drawn,” she added.
Another resident, Hannah Bonnick, was in her backyard with her children when she heard the commotion. Initially, she noted the sound of sirens, which is not uncommon in the area. However, this was followed by a period of intense yelling and then the unmistakable sound of a gunshot.
- Immediate Reaction: Ms Bonnick swiftly reacted to the sounds, yelling to her children to get back inside the house.
- They then moved upstairs, secured the doors, and were instructed to gather in her room for safety.
- Scene Observation: From her vantage point, Ms Bonnick could see a significant police presence, with numerous police cars filling the busy road. A helicopter also began circling overhead, remaining in the vicinity for a considerable period of 30 to 45 minutes.
Ms Bonnick expressed her shock at the incident, noting it was a significant disruption to their ordinarily quiet community, especially given the proximity of two schools. “It was pretty scary only because just we didn’t know what was happening,” she admitted.
A representative from Suncoast Christian College, situated close to the incident site, confirmed that police had reassured the school that the area was secure and that normal pick-up procedures for students could proceed. Other witnesses reported hearing multiple marked and unmarked police vehicles speeding towards the scene.
Investigation Underway
The Queensland Police Service has confirmed that the matter will be thoroughly investigated by the Ethical Standards Command, with oversight provided by the Crime and Corruption Commission. Further information is expected to be released by police at a press conference scheduled for later this afternoon. The investigation will aim to clarify the sequence of events, the man’s actions, and the circumstances leading to the police shooting.
