Norwegian Diplomat Resigns Amidst Epstein Investigation
A significant political and diplomatic fallout is unfolding in Norway following the recent release of documents related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Mona Juul, a prominent Norwegian diplomat who served as the ambassador to Jordan and Iraq, has stepped down from her post. This decision comes after an investigation was launched into her alleged connections with Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges.
Juul, a figure of considerable influence in Norwegian foreign policy, notably played a crucial role in the clandestine negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians that culminated in the historic Oslo Accords in the early 1990s. Her temporary suspension on Monday preceded the announcement of her resignation, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sought to thoroughly examine the extent of her dealings with Epstein.
According to reports from Norwegian media, Epstein’s will included a bequest of approximately £7.4 million to Juul’s two children, whom she shares with her husband, Terje Rod-Larsen, another diplomat and a key broker of the Oslo talks.
The Norwegian Foreign Minister, Espen Barth Eide, has publicly stated that Juul’s resignation was a “correct and necessary decision.” He characterised her contact with Epstein, a convicted abuser, as a “serious lapse in judgement.” Minister Eide emphasised that the ministry would continue its dialogue with Juul to ascertain the full scope of her interactions with Epstein during her tenure as an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the interim, the deputy ambassador will assume leadership of the embassy in Jordan until a permanent replacement is appointed.
Thomas Skjelbred, Juul’s legal representative, issued a statement explaining that his client’s resignation was prompted by the untenable situation that made it “impossible for her to discharge her duties in a responsible manner.” He further highlighted the immense personal toll the affair has taken on Juul and her immediate family, while affirming her commitment to continued cooperation with the foreign ministry.
Wider Scrutiny in Norwegian Circles
The Epstein revelations have cast a shadow over various high-profile individuals within Norway’s political and royal spheres. Beyond Ambassador Juul, other prominent figures have come under scrutiny:
- Børge Brende: The CEO of the World Economic Forum has been found to have had multiple business dinners with Epstein. He also engaged in communication with Epstein via email and text messages. Brende has initiated an investigation into himself within the WEF.
- Thorbjørn Jagland: Norway’s former prime minister is currently facing an investigation for alleged “aggravated corruption.” His lawyer, Anders Brosveet, has welcomed the commencement of this investigation, expressing confidence in its eventual outcome based on current findings.
- Crown Princess Mette-Marit: The Norwegian Crown Princess has also been drawn into the controversy due to her past association with Epstein. She has publicly expressed her “deep regret” regarding this relationship.
The Unfinished Epstein Investigation
Jeffrey Epstein’s death in August 2019 brought an abrupt halt to one of the most significant federal criminal cases in recent history. Prosecutors had accused him of orchestrating an extensive sex trafficking operation involving underage girls, with numerous alleged victims coming forward to detail experiences of abuse that spanned across multiple states and international borders.
His arrest in July 2019 followed years of controversy surrounding a lenient plea deal he struck in Florida in 2008, which at the time allowed him to evade federal prosecution. The subsequent charges brought against him in New York exposed him to the potential of decades in prison if convicted.
While Epstein’s death effectively concluded the criminal proceedings against him, federal investigations into his alleged co-conspirators have continued.
Failures at the Metropolitan Correctional Center
Epstein’s demise occurred amidst a series of documented failures within the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC), a high-security federal detention facility in New York. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death revealed significant lapses in protocol and security:
- Missed Guard Checks: Prison records indicate that guards assigned to monitor Epstein failed to conduct mandatory checks during the overnight hours leading up to his discovery. Scheduled rounds at 3am and 5am were reportedly missed.
- Malfunctioning Surveillance: Compounding the security failures, surveillance cameras positioned outside Epstein’s cell were not functioning correctly on the night of his death. At least two cameras were found to be malfunctioning, creating critical blind spots in the monitoring of his unit.
- Incomplete Timeline: These operational deficiencies significantly hampered investigators’ ability to establish a precise timeline of Epstein’s final hours, and to this day, no definitive official time of death has been officially determined.
Unanswered Questions from Surveillance Footage
Newly released Department of Justice (DOJ) files include details of surveillance footage that investigators reviewed in the aftermath of Epstein’s death. These records offer insights into activity within the MCC, including observations from inside the facility.
According to these documents, investigators from the FBI and the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General identified footage showing what appeared to be an unidentified figure moving towards the floor where Epstein was housed. The footage reportedly captured an orange-coloured shape ascending a staircase in the vicinity of Epstein’s unit during the overnight period.
While investigators noted this movement, they did not publicly confirm any direct link between this figure and Epstein or his death. The limitations and malfunctions of the surveillance system ultimately prevented investigators from reconstructing a complete visual record of the activity within Epstein’s unit, leaving certain aspects of that night open to interpretation.
