Road Rage Incident in Cheras: Man Arrested for Assault and Threats

A 52-year-old man is currently in police custody following an alleged assault and criminal intimidation against a 69-year-old retiree. The incident, which reportedly stemmed from a minor traffic collision, occurred near Pekan Suntex, Batu 9 Cheras, and has led to a police investigation into road rage behaviour.

The Confrontation Unfolds

The victim, a retiree, filed a police report detailing the harrowing experience. According to the report lodged at 4.49pm yesterday, the elderly man claimed he sustained injuries after being subjected to an attack and intimidation by the suspect. The confrontation took place near a traffic light, a common point of congestion and potential friction on the roads.

Initial police assessments suggest that the altercation escalated from a seemingly minor traffic mishap. Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof, the Kajang district police chief, confirmed that preliminary investigations point to a collision between the complainant’s vehicle and that of the suspect as the catalyst for the ensuing violence.

Swift Apprehension and Remand

Responding to the victim’s report, the Kajang police acted swiftly. The suspect was apprehended later on the same day, at approximately 11.30pm, in the Kajang area. He has since been remanded for two days to facilitate ongoing investigations into the alleged assault and threats. This period will allow police to gather further evidence, record statements, and piece together the sequence of events.

Legal Ramifications

The case is being investigated under two key sections of the Malaysian Penal Code, highlighting the seriousness of the alleged offences.

  • Section 323 of the Penal Code (Voluntarily Causing Hurt): This section deals with the act of intentionally causing physical harm to another person. Conviction under this section can result in a prison sentence of up to one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or a combination of both. The severity of the injuries sustained by the victim will likely play a role in determining the final sentence.

  • Section 506 of the Penal Code (Criminal Intimidation): This section addresses the act of threatening another person with injury or with damage to their property, with the intention of causing alarm. If the threat made by the suspect involved death or grievous harm, the penalties are significantly more severe, carrying a potential imprisonment of up to seven years.

A Call for Information and Road Safety

Kajang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof has appealed to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses any information relevant to the investigation is urged to come forward. They can contact the nearest police station or reach out directly to the investigating officer, Sergeant Ganesan Ramachandran, at 012-608 9180.

Furthermore, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and exercising responsible behaviour on the roads. Assistant Commissioner Naazron reiterated the need for all road users to remain calm and de-escalate potential conflicts, emphasizing that minor traffic incidents should not lead to violence. The police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will not tolerate acts of aggression and intimidation on public roads. The investigation is ongoing.
