Gombe South Earns Crucial Support for Governorship Bid
A prominent coalition, the Gombe State Unity Alliance Movement, has officially thrown its weight behind the gubernatorial aspirations of Abubakar Bappah, a former Commissioner for Works. The group is advocating strongly for the next governor of Gombe State to hail from the southern senatorial district, an area that has yet to hold the state’s highest office. This call for a power shift is gaining significant traction, with Bappah, who also serves on the board of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, emerging as a key figure in this movement.
The Gombe State Unity Alliance Movement, a diverse assembly of political stakeholders, elders, women, and youth representatives drawn from all three senatorial zones, conveyed their unwavering support during a recent solidarity visit to Bappah’s residence in Gombe GRA. This visit was not only a demonstration of solidarity but also an occasion to extend Sallah greetings and formally encourage Bappah to contest the governorship under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A Case for Equity and Competence
Ali Garba, the convener of the Gombe State Unity Alliance Movement, articulated the group’s rationale, emphasizing Bappah’s suitability for the role. He described Bappah as a leader possessing both capability and vision, asserting that he is well-equipped to build upon and consolidate the achievements of the incumbent administration.
“Abubakar Bappah is a competent and visionary leader with the capacity to sustain and build on the achievements of the incumbent Governor, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya,” Garba stated. He further highlighted Bappah’s extensive experience and strong grassroots connection as critical assets that position him as a formidable contender for the state’s top leadership position.
Beyond Bappah’s individual merits, the coalition underscored the principle of equity as a driving force behind their endorsement. They pointed out the historical imbalance in gubernatorial representation, noting that Gombe North has produced former governors Abubakar Hashidu and Hassan Dankwambo, as well as the current governor, Inuwa Yahaya. Gombe Central has been represented by former Governor Danjuma Goje. Consequently, Gombe South remains the sole senatorial district yet to have its son or daughter as governor since the state’s inception.
“The time has come to ensure equity and fairness through inclusive political representation,” Garba emphasized, arguing that a shift in power to Gombe South is a matter of justice and balanced political participation.
Broad-Based Endorsement and Future Commitments
The sentiment for a southern governor is not confined to a single group. Leaders from other senatorial districts have also publicly pledged their allegiance to Bappah’s ambition. Alhaji Baba Buba Kawuwa, representing Gombe North, alongside other key stakeholders from Gombe Central and South, including Benjamin Abner Mamman and Christopher Tal, have assured Bappah of their readiness to spearhead mobilization efforts across the entire state.
These leaders have committed to deploying both financial resources and established grassroots networks to ensure the success of Bappah’s campaign. This multi-zonal support signals a unified front and a shared vision for the future leadership of Gombe State.

In his response to the delegation, Abubakar Bappah expressed his profound appreciation for the visit and the resounding endorsement. He interpreted their support as a powerful testament to the confidence placed in his leadership capabilities.
“I appreciate this overwhelming show of support. It is a strong vote of confidence in my leadership,” Bappah remarked. He unequivocally confirmed his intention to vie for the governorship in the upcoming elections, expressing unwavering confidence in his ability to steer the state effectively.
“I have the requisite experience, capacity, and vision to lead the state,” he asserted, reinforcing his preparedness for the challenges ahead.
Bappah echoed the coalition’s call for power rotation, stressing that granting Gombe South the opportunity to produce the next governor would significantly foster justice and political equilibrium within the state. He also expressed optimism regarding the current governor’s role in the selection process.
